7 INDIE VENUES YOU HAVE TO VISIT IN YOUR LIFETIME
It’s no secret that indie music is a little bit cooler, a little bit edgier, and a little bit better than what everyone else is listening to. And when you’ve taken the effort to discover and develop a taste of your own, it's worth the effort to watch your favorite indie bands play in a location just as cool as the music. Here are seven venues around the country where you have to attend a concert before you die.
West Hollywood, California
Located near the border of Beverly Hills, the iconic Troubador was the place to be if you were into emerging heavy metal and punk bands in the 70s and 80s. Today, the intimate venue is still a thriving scene drawing all sorts of talent from all corners of the globe, but particularly from across the pond.
The Bluebird Theatre in downtown Denver used to screen movies and then was a porn theatre for a bit before landing a spot on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The venue is known for its excellent acoustics all around, but try to get a spot on one of the cute little side balconies to get the best stage view in the house.
New York, New York
If you’re into the more avant garde and eccentric things in life, then you’ll probably love The Stone. The venue is simple, intimate and unassuming, but the music – often experimental in nature – will blow your mind.
The Hideout is literally hidden in one of Chicago’s industrial neighborhoods, but it’s worth seeking out. The beloved venue is over 100 years old and is known for taking chances on emerging artists, who tend to return to The Hideout after they make it big.
One of the stalwarts of the thriving Austin music scene, Emo’s is known for hosting alternative bands in the days before their big break. The acoustics are so great that the four-stage location is an official South by Southwest venue.
Eve in a city known for everything alternative, Aladdin Theatre is a standout venue known for bringing in top-notch indie rock talent. The interior is reminiscent of an old-time theatre, which makes sense considering its origins as a vaudeville house.
MIDDLE EAST DOWNSTAIRS
Want to put amazing food in your belly while watching belly dancers rock the night away? You better get down to Middle East Downstairs, where the drinks are cheap and the music is as exciting and different as any foreign land.
The major music capitals across the country have no lack for great venues, but the seven above are worth seeking out. Rock out loud with your favorite indie artists, knowing you not only have great taste in music but even better taste in music venues.
