Avicii vs Simon Cowell = Oops!
I thought Usher stealing from Homer Simpson would have been the top plagiarizing story of the past year, but then along came the musical Antichrist that is Simon Cowell, who has recently decided to loot from underground electronica artist, Avicii, and all for his green eyed girl, Leona Lewis...
It would appear that Leona's new track 'Collide' has completely ripped the instrumental from the Swedish DJ's track 'Penguin', and all without having the decency to tell him...
Just compare the two for yourself:
Avicii's label, Ministry of Sound, are currently said to be considering legal action against Cowell, while SyCo are claiming it's a mere case of 'sour grapes:' "Avicii is already credited as a songwriter on Leona's song," a SyCo rep said. "It's a case of sour grapes from Ministry Of Sound."
Ahh but here's the point. You can't just take someone's copyright and make a new song without their permission. Ooops!
Still, between all this label bitching, we must not forget DJ Avicii himself, the young man who has just awoke to discover his instrumental has been looted by the SyCo kingdom. Speaking of the thievery, Avicii, real name Tim Berg, said: "To answer everyone, the first time I heard Leona Lewis 'Collide' was today. I didn't produce it and neither me or my manager could approve it."
It ended up that the track was reproduced by hit maker Sandy Vee. Said Avicii:
"I'm just upset for someone taking credit of our idea before I had a chance to release it... And for the time and effort that has been put into this by my manager and label."
To further complicate matters...it looks like there is yet an another vocal version of the "Penguin" mix with the song "Fade Into Darkness" which appears to be the approved Avicii vocal version.
The end result should be good for Avicii...a copyright infringement lawsuit (winning!) and 3 hit versions of the same song.
Yes...the Leona version is not bad at all.
