New Finds: Bastille from South London

10/28/11

Led by South London's golden-voiced and utterly-likeable Dan Smith, Bastille is a new indie pop act recently signed to uber-cool U.K.-based indie record label Young & Lost Club (the same label that Young the Giant and Bombay Bicycle Club call home). [Photograph by: Sam Rowlands]

Bastille creates melodic, emo-pop songs, complete with pitch-perfect vocals, layered harmonies, sweet-sounding synths and slick electronic beats. Their sound could be compared to The Postal Service, Geographer or Ra Ra Riot (or even better, Ra Ra Riot's and Vampire Weekend's electro-pop side project/lovechild, Discovery).

Although they have yet to release an LP, the positive buzz surrounding Bastille has been building since they released their breakthrough debut single "Flaws"/"Icarus" earlier this year. The unofficial video for "Flaws" -- an infectious gem that's pretty much, well, flawless -- has garnered over 150,000 hits and dozens of amateur covers on YouTube. Currently touring the U.K., Bastille is also gaining a reputation as a killer live act.

On November 14, Bastille will release their sophomore effort, a four-track EP entitled "Laura Palmer" (yes, as in the dead girl from "Twin Peaks"), which, judging by the title track, is sure to deliver more emotionally-driven, techno-tinged, British-accented goodness. Yay. Check out the video and lyrics for "Laura Palmer" below.

BΞ”STILLE by BASTILLE

Lyrics to Laura Palmer:

Walking out into the dark
Cutting out a different path
Lead by your beating heart

All the people of the town
Cast their eyes right to the ground
In matters of the heart

The night was all you had
You ran into the night from all you had
Found yourself a path upon the ground
You ran into the night; you can't be found

But
This is your heart

Can you feel it?
Can you feel it?

Pumps through your veins

Can you feel it?
Can you feel it?

Summer evening breezes blew
Drawing voices deep from you
Lead by your beating heart

What a year and what a night
What terrifying final sights
Put out your beating heart

The night was all you had
You ran into the night from all you had
Found yourself a path upon the ground
You ran into the night; you can't be found

But
This is your heart

Can you feel it?
Can you feel it?

Pumps through your veins

Can you feel it?
Can you feel it?

If you had your gun would you shoot it at the sky, why?
To see where it would fall, will you come down at all?
If you had your gun would you shoot it at the sky, why?
To see where your bullet would fall, will you come down at all?

This is your heart

Can you feel it?
Can you feel it?

Pumps through your veins

Can you feel it?
Can you feel it?

This is your racing heart

Can you feel it? Can you feel it?

Pumps through your veins

Can you feel it?
Can you feel it?
