BEST EDM - WEEK 43
YEAH! YES! YAY! YIPPEE! BEST NEW DANCE MUSIC is always the best time of the week. The Internet is a sad and dark place full of mad dank memes, but right now it’s about the bass and the vocals and drums and melody and production techniques and awesome sounds from all of the worlds most awesome producers. Aren’t you just lucky ducks that the internet provides such good shit for you every week without avail.
I mean, you’re welcome.
New awesomeness from SBTRKT, Canblaster, ZHU, DUCKY and Calyx & TeeBee. Oh boy! Here we go!
SBTRKT - FLICKER
A dope ass chill new beat from one of the smartest producers working out there today. Can’t go wrong with new music from SBTRKT, unless of course you hate things that are good and only enjoy garbage music (OR it’s opposite day. Is today opposite day?).
CANBLASTER - ENCORE DX
it’s really about time you start paying complete and total attention to the Club Cheval squad. These four frenchies are all releasing some of the most melodic, sexual techno out there today. Canblaster is my favorite of the four, which also includes MYD, Panteros666 and Sam Tiba. It seems that Canblaster as a gift for interesting and unique melodies. Check out his EP with Lido or any of the Club Cheval songs (they’re performing live for the first time in a long time at Hard Day of the Dead), or you know you could just listen to Encore DX above because it’s fucking awesome and you won’t be able to get the melodic hook ear worm out of your brain.
BASEMENT JAXX - UNICORN (BIG DOPE P & TT THE ARTIST REMIX)
Man, I’m such a huge fan of the Basement Jaxx original mix of "Unicorn" that I’m of course going to be a sucker for any remix. But this TT The Artist and Big Dope P one is absolutely out of its mind. These two turned the disco groover into a Jersey Club hitter. This shit is pretty wild and so remarkably different from the original. Props for finding THIS out of THAT. Pretty cool what music can do.
ZHU X VANCOUVER SLEEP CLINIC X DANIEL JOHNS - MODERN CONVERSATION
Well now ZHU is 5/5. 5 new songs in 5 new weeks and they all are absolute fire. Here, his collaboration with Vancouver Sleep Clinc and Daniel Johns is much more classic ZHU, almost feeling like the only track that belongs on the first EP. But that’s not a bad thing. Zhou is making himself quite the legend in his own time right now, and it’s pretty goddamn exciting if you ask me.
MATISSE & SADKO - LOCK 'N' LOAD
As far as big room dudes go, I always found Matisse & Sadko to be inventive and fresh. Here, in their video for Lock ’N’ Load we get the the traditional big bigger biggest build into a bizarrely dark drop, filled with 808s, daft punk synths and off kilter rhythms. If you gotta go big, you might as well go weird, right? Music video is a skate board skate hockey game that looks pretty rad.
GOLDFISH - HEART SHAPED BOX FT. JULIA CHURCH
It’s no surprise that we’re living in the era of dance music Nirvana covers and remixes. Between Robin Schulz’ hack Smells Like Teen Spirit remix and now this this bass-y soulful horn driven "Heart Shaped Box" cover from Goldfish and Julia Church. Good thing for these guys I’m a SUCKER for "Heart Shaped Box," always have been. I mean everybody knows In Utero is the classic Nirvana album, not Nevermind. It’s the Empire Strikes Back of Nirvana records. Okay, I’m pretty much in love with this track now.
ROUTE 94 - MY LOVE (BEN DOOKS REMIX)
Route 94’s "My Love" is as much as a house music classic as you can get in 2015. It’s big, it’s funky, it’s catchy and it’s memorable as hell. Ben Dooks’ remix is a solid effort, throwing in beautiful piano house melodies and white noise galore on the drop. Don’t know much about Ben Dooks, but at least he knows how to not mess up a classic, right?
DUCKY - LOST ANGELES EP
Let’s dive right into this whole new bizarre EP from LA-based producer, DUCKY. Three experimental ambient tracks that are built for the club, this is one of the strangest and most interesting EP’s I’ve heard in a while. All three tracks are supremely minimal and quiet, but would pop-off in the middle of a techno or Jamie xx DJ set. The EP opens with an emotional daze title track, that I can relate to all the more because I’ve lost myself in Los Angeles and I’m totally for real leaving the city soon. And then, it gets followed up with the weird and hypnotic Rain Dance, that feels like outtakes from Jamie xx’s Gosh studio sessions. The EP is rounded out with the chill, wintery beat, "Winter Song." Thanks Nest for the heads up. Gonna pay serious attention to this chick.
RUDIMENTAL - LAY IT ALL ON ME FEAT. ED SHEERAN (CALYX & TEEBEE REMIX)
I was promoting outside of the Rudimental show in LA and one of my buddies was promoting for the drum & bass night in LA and he asked some guy coming out of the show if he liked Drum & Bass. The guy looked at my friend like an asshole and said “PSHAW. No.”
Little did he realize that Rudimental ARE drum & bass.
Let’s leave it up to Calyx & TeeBee to prove it. The dudes bring their signature big bass to this track and turn it into proper D&B. Even if Rudimental left the groundwork months ago. Much better than the original, IMO.
ZAC SAMUAL - I'LL BE PUSHIN ON (CARNAGE & BIG GIGANTIC EDIT)
Since Carnage basically took to the internet this week to say he had no idea what he was doing in the studio and basically just having people ghost produce for him, I’m gonna go out on a limb saying this soulful, sexual edit of Zac Samuel’s "I’ll Be Pushin On" is pretty much solely in the hands of Big Gigantic. Maybe an idea or two from Carnage. But his ideas aren’t what sucks, it’s his attitude and overall output. Props to the Big Gigantic boys for making something awesome.
About Kurt Kroeber
From deep within the murky depths of the Los Angeles River emerged a creature: 50% raver, 50% comedian, 10% Robotcop. Kurt Kroeber doesn’t own a dog, operates Soundbleed (the world’s only dance party comedy talk show rave), and is down to party with you. Come up some time and say “Hey dude!” But definitely make sure to casually drop the secret Illuminati password.
