BEST INDIE POP: WEEK 41

What if I told you that the Best of Indie Pop is like the Szechuan sauce from McDonalds? It’s much more than a sauce, or in our case, it’s much more than a playlist. This is something tangy and sweet. You don’t just dunk your lifeless chicken nuggets into it, you bathe in it, sleep with it, eat your beans with it. Like the sauce, today’s playlist is one that you’ll want to carry with you anywhere and everywhere you go. Play it in the shower, play it in class, or in the car, and be sure you have it handy for an emergency. The only difference from our playlist and the sauce is that you’ll never have to worry about us running out of material for you to listen to. We’ve come prepared to serve audible gems to the masses.

ALEXANDER LEWIS - OFF GUARD

First up on our mouth watering list is the Oakland producer Alexander Lewis whose forte lies in creating catchy trap tracks that get the blood pumping. Just listen to “Off Guard” and tell me it doesn’t make you want to move your body. Embrace the style because good vibes don’t come our way often.

AVANTE BLACK - ACID LOVE

I’ve featured Avante Black in previous weeks, but it’s worth a second take, you know in case you missed it the first time around. The London artist is winning hearts thanks to beautiful productions like her most recent single “Acid Love.” I guarantee that when you listen to this above you’ll be drooling over her before the song is over.

GREY - WINGS CLIPPED FEAT. AVRIL LAVIGNE AND ANTHONY GREEN

Mankind is reaching its foretold destruction because I never in my lifetime thought I would be highlighting Avril Lavigne in a Best of Pop post. I am in shock and you should be too … but hey I’ve seen, heard, and tasted stranger things. I assure you this though, “Wings Clipped” is not a mistake, it’s the best WTF sound we’ve heard this season and as much as I want to skip over the track, I can’t help but hit the replay button.

TOKIMONSTA  - ESTRANGE FEATURING IO ECHO

We are total creepers when it comes to TOKiMONSTA, and by we I am referring to me. I’ve sub’d/ followed all her channels and have somewhat of a shrine going on in my basement (J/K, I don’t actually have a basement). With the release of her album Lune Rouge, TOKiMONSTA seems to have expanded and refined her sound. Take for instance “Estrange;” the piece is stunning and I’m willing to bet that we have yet to see her at her strongest. No pressure of course ;)

SLANG - COKEROACHES

What you hear may appear to be the sound of a goofy gag song, but it’s more than that, it’s down right entertaining af. English artist Slang has worked alongside big acts like Charli XCX and Marina & The Diamonds, but he’s decided to take the plunge himself and how grateful we all are to listen to something with a theme other than heartbreak, or revenge. Let’s thank the cokeroaches for inspiring this electrifying piece.

ST. VINCENT - PILLS

We could have just dropped a soundcloud link for this one, but I think it’s far more enjpyable to stare at a still image of St. Vincent as she sings her latest releases “Pills.” The single featured on her new new album MASSEDUCTION, out this Friday, October 13th, is another tongue in cheek jab at society's need for pills. Gosh, we really have no hope, haha. "Pills to walk, pills to think/ Pills, pills, pills for the family/ Pills to grow, pills to shrink/ Pills, pills, pills and a good stiff drink.”

SEVDALIZA - MAD WOMAN

Hold on to your tits, Sevdaliza is back with a track that will make you want to be that woman she refers to in the lyrics. The production on “Mad Woman” is huge! This is one insanely sinister tone that will haunt you after it’s done playing. Be sure to listen to this one in a quiet setting, preferably right before you snooze off.

ODESZA - ACROSS THE ROOM FEATURING LEON BRIDGES

Ooh, I feel like my soul gets cleansed every time I hear Leon Bridges. Heck, he could be cursing at a child and it would still sound like a sermon from an angelic being. In the above awakening, Odesza makes this collaboration into an insanely great piece. It’s 100% perfection.

R3HAB - TALKING TO YOU FEATURING RYNN

Time to stretch your necks because R3hab has created one delicious head bopping track that invites you to discover Las Vegas. The smooth infectious sound has some listeners begging for the old big room R3hab, but really, as we transition into fall, this style pairs great with a pumpkin spice latte.

SON LUX - DREAM STATE

spotify Son Lux returns with new material. Their first single “Dream State,” is taken from their upcoming new album Brighter Wounds, releasing in February of 2018. We can expect to hear what Son Lux does best which is euphoric grandiose pop. The above release is epic and leaves us anxiously waiting for more.

Beca Arredondo is easily unamused with all things not related to her interests.  On her good days you can catch her avoiding the California sun and glued to her Mac plotting the next big thing. If you happen to run into her on the street and notice her wearing headphones do NOT disturb her. She is not responsible for any possible damage. Aside from the above she's very sweet and perky and responds well to good music and food.
