BEST OF INDIE POP - WEEK 52
Did you get everything you asked for on your wish list? Did ya? Did ya? Or did good ol’ Saint Nick stuff your stuffers with socks you never asked for? Was your feast at least any good? Did your tree light on fire or did mom get caught kissing Santa’s brother? Either way your holiday went, we here at We Are: The Guard are back and running. Today’s playlist may not be what was on your wish list but it will at least help get you back into the groove of things. Enjoy this week’s indie-pop favorites featuring Major Lazer, Diplo, 6lack, and more. Apologize if I missed anything, I’m fighting a mean case of the hangover.
MAJOR LAZER - SUA CARA (FEAT. ANITTA & PABLLO VITTAR)
Major Lazer is chasing away winter blues with a spicy hot video for “Sua Cara” aka “Your Face.” Featuring the vocals of Brazilian singers Anitta & Pabllo Vittar, there is no need to Google translate what they are saying because their dancing says it all. One play and watch that snow melt away.
6LACK - BEEN A WHILE
Atlanta rapper dropped two bonus cuts from his album East Atlanta Love Letter last week for fans, one of them being the smooth flowing “Been A While.” The single offers an honest look at some heartfelt lyrics that dance between vulnerability and strength from within the 6lack himself. Take a listen above and open up your heart to “Been A While.”
ICE CUBE - THAT NEW FUNKADELIC
Kids who grew up after the big Y2K have no idea what they missed out on in the 90s, but thank goodness Ice Cube has not retired his mic because his funk was missing in our lives. His latest single “That New Funkadelic” taken from his album Everthang’s Corrupt, is a blessing in disguise for all of us. His lyrics are everthang “You know the funk will lingers, all these motherf***ers wanna smell my finger.” The visuals are genius and take the rap game to a whole new level.
MAJOR LAZER - BLOW THAT SMOKE (FEAT TOVE LO)
We got another pop-up video from Major Lazer for you. By the time you’re done listening to “Blow That Smoke” you’ll be left knowing a lot of things that no one will ever care about, but these little tidbit facts make for excellent ice-breakers at parties.
LIL JON - FT KOOL-AID MAN - ALL I REALLY WANT FOR CHRISTMAS
Get your crunk fix with this terrifying video of Lil Jon getting down with America’s favorite diabetic spokesperson Kool-Aid. WTF did we just see?! Just goes to show that Lil Jon is a genius and can get down to anything while keeping it classy. Yeaaaaahhh!
SEEB, BASTILLE - GRIP
I bet if vegans were to watch Seeb and Bastille’s lyric video for “Grip” they would never dare eat another piece of fruit, because who would really want to eat anything that has googly eyes? Only heartless humans, that’s who. I will tell you this though, the visuals are perfect for those fond of ASMR. Anyways, Bastlle teams up with producer Seeb and together they do what they do best … create music that lifts your spirits and makes you feel high on life.
CIGARETTES AFTER SEX - NEON MOON
Listening to Cigarettes After Sex is truly an intimate affair. The band can take literally anything and turn into a tune to be enjoyed while snuggling up with your S.O. Their cover “Neon Moon” by country duo Dunns & Brooks is transformed into an emotionally charged single of two distant lovers hanging on by a fragile thread.
GALANTIS - SAN FRANCISCO (WITH SOFIA CARSON)
If you overdosed on cookies and milk this past holiday Galantis and Sofia Carson are here to help sweat off those extra pounds of butter you consumed. Play this track a few times and watch the extra weight around your hips and thighs disappear.
INDIE CHRISTMAS COMPILATION
We are not particularly fond of Christmas music but when it comes to DENM, EMAN8, Dog Orchestra, MXMS, CAPPA, Janelle Kroll, Jamie Lidell, and the below fine folks that are part of our compilation, they sure know how to make you believe in the holiday spirit. From dark renditions to California soaked rhythms, these Christmas classics will have you singing along ‘till the ball comes dropping down on January 1st.

Beca Arredondo is easily unamused with all things not related to her interests. On her good days you can catch her avoiding the California sun and glued to her Mac plotting the next big thing. If you happen to run into her on the street and notice her wearing headphones do NOT disturb her. She is not responsible for any possible damage. Aside from the above she's very sweet and perky and responds well to good music and food.
