BEST NEW COVERS: WEAVES - DRAG ME DOWN
We knew there’d be some casualties in the streaming wars, but at least this one has a happy ending. Or at least a happy ending for us, the listeners. Without (corporate) death, you see, we wouldn’t have heard Weaves' incredible 1D cover, “Drag Me Down.”
The Toronto-based quartet was approached by now defunct streaming service Rdio to cover the galaxy-devouring, pop culture behemoth One DirectIon for a compilation they were putting together. Shortly thereafter Rdio filed for bankruptcy and announced it was closing forever.
Big win for the letter A.
Weaves finished the cover before they learned of the company’s demise, which we share with you today. They render this pop ballad nearly unrecognizable, coating it in layers of grime and stank. Basically instead of the biggest hit in the world, this version sounds like Kimya Dawson cut where she channels the Alabama Shakes. It sounds righteous. It sounds like the truth.
