BEST NEW INDIE: MATING RITUAL - HOW YOU GONNA STOP IT?

Mating RItual - How You Gonna Stop It

It's the first week back at work after the holidays and spirits are at an all time low, but Los Angeles artist Ryan Marshall Lawhon, aka Mating Ritual, is here to give us the boost of energy that we need to get through to Friday with the rip-roaring “How You Gonna Stop It?”

Featured on his upcoming debut album of the same name, “How You Gonna Stop It?” is a high-octane blast of indie pop that hears Ryan sing-rapping the nihilistic lyrics (“I hear the graveyard calling/Stop talking 'bout your work you know you're not gonna go/Might as well kick the bucket/Yeah it sucks getting old but how you gonna stop it?”) with reckless abandon.

On the story behind the party-starting track – which he also produced – Lawhon tells Impose:

“The inspiration for 'How You Gonna Stop It?' came when a friend I hadn't seen in some time invited me out for a drink. While I'm all for healthy lifestyles and anyone's right to drink or not drink at their own discretion, I find it rude to invite someone to a place where the only purchasable item is alcohol and order water/insist I drink alone, just so your Instagram followers can see that you're 'out' and having 'fun.' We could have gone to a coffee shop, a movie, my apartment, literally anywhere else. I felt bad for my friend, who was so clearly wrapped up in maintaining a curated social media presence that they couldn't enjoy 150 calories with a friend they hadn't seen in a year. We're all getting older and if the last five years have been a reliable forecast, hangovers will unbearable by the time we stop caring how many double taps our posts get, so let's tie one on while our bodies can take it.”

I'm sure that I'm not the only one who also has a “friend” like that. On that note, hit play on “How You Gonna Stop It?” below, and if you want to sing along (warning, it's a tongue-twister!), check out the lyrics after the jump.

MATING RITUAL - HOW YOU GONNA STOP IT?

Pick me up in your Monday suit and tie
Grab a drink in the lobby before 9
You complain about your weight and waking up on time
You need to chill out and follow me tonight

Waking up in a place I've never been before
It smells like piss and olives
Getting drunk never used to be this difficult
I hear the graveyard calling
Stop talking 'bout your work you know you're not gonna go
Might as well kick the bucket
Yeah it sucks getting old but how you gonna stop it?

How you gonna stop it?
(Let it go)

Take a chance with me let's step outside
This party sucks but where else you gotta be tonight
Seems to soon to get back to our lonely lives
I don't know if we can keep up but I'm willing to try

Fall asleep on a bed I've never seen before
Who likes a soft ass mattress
Throwing up in the hall of my sister's dorm
Everyone saw that comin'
Getting drunk never used to be this difficult
I hear the graveyard calling
Yeah it sucks getting old but how you gonna stop it?

How you gonna stop it?
(Let it go)

Take a chance with me
It'll be alright
Take a chance with me
You'll be fuckin' fine
