BEST NEW INDIE POP: FLUME - DEPTH CHARGE
We at We Are The Guard love Flume’s 2016 EP, Companion. It is, quite literally, a companion to the solo act’s explosive debut album, Skin. Since then, the electro favorite has played a sold out world tour and worked the festival circuit, leaving devoted followers hypnotized.
FLUME - DEPTH CHARGE
The Skin Companion II EP only delivers more of what fans love with four mind-boggling tracks, including our favorite, “Depth Charge.” “Depth Charge” is just that much more layered than the rest, which may be why it was picked to close the compilation. It is also the only track to not have a featured artist, leaving Flume to rely solely on his own musical skill.
Repetitious cymbals clash under vocals that sound like they’re under water—which strangely enough, describes why we love it. Each element is so expertly coated, one on top of another, in such a strange way that it makes us want to listen again and again to figure out how he pieces the puzzle together. And then once we solve the puzzle—how he manages to put the natural and synthetic together so seamlessly—we want to move to it.
