BEST NEW SONGS: CASSIUS - THE MISSING FT. RYAN TEDDER AND JAW
SONGS. It’s always in the plural, and today it has every reason to be. French electronic duo Philippe Cerboneschi and Hubert Blanc-Francard, a.k.a. Cassius, announced their first album in a decade: Ibifornia. The title is a combination of Ibiza and California. If you guessed that Ibifornia is a utopian place that’s “inside every one of us,” where everyone does the things they actually want, then you’re on the same wave-length as the band. More than an album, this is a lifestyle.
Last month they release their first song in six years, a Cat Power/Mike D collar entitled “Action.” Turns out it was just the tip of the iceberg. Along with announcing the new LP, they also released “The Missing,” a duet featuring OneRepublic lead singer Ryan Tedder and French songstress JAW, along with “Go Up,” a song that yet again features Chan Marshall and Pharrell.
Now in their third decade of making music together, second as genuine superstars, Cassius has the polished sounds of a duo who’ve weathered a thousands storms, but their new tracks have an energy and vibrance to them that are usually associated with younger acts. Thus far their new album sounds like the Beach Boys experimenting with underground house. Not only does it separate them from the electronic masses, but it sounds fantastic. Your beach vacation soundtrack has arrived.
