BEST NEW SONGS: MACKLEMORE & RYAN LEWIS “DOWNTOWN"

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis - Downtown

Regardless of your thoughts on carpetbagger Macklemore and his main bro Ryan Lewis, what’s undeniable is that these dudes are exceptional songwriters. With his latest offering “Downtown” he’s got another masterful pop song to add to his resume. Just a heads up, this one is going to be big. You’re going to hear it everywhere for the next 9-12 month and will undeniably hate it by Christmas.

The new dad Ben Haggerty gets to letting people know how babies are made with this double entendre-riddle single. Foxy Shazam vocalist, Eric Nally assists with a massive hook in a song full of massive hooks. He also recruited Caz, Kool and Melle Mel for “Downtown,” marking the first time the hip hop legends have appeared on the same track.

The video for “Downtown” is another win for a guy who doesn’t seem to do anything else. Directed by Lewis, Macklemore, and Jason Koenig, it’s basically “Thrift Shop” meets West Side Story meets Ben Hur Meets the fight scene from Anchor Man. It’s completely over-the-top and charming, not unlike that earnest motherf**ker Macklemore.

“Downtown” is destined to inspire a thousands think-pieces and I’m sure they’re already a dozen calls of cultural appropriation headed Haggerty’s way, but let’s just enjoy this for what it is: a really good pop song.
