BEST NEW TRACK: POLICA - STILL COUNTS FT. SPANK ROCK
The Polica I’ve come to know and love is an intimate group, whose synth & trip hop tendencies have helped zone me out of life throughout the years. So you can imagine my surprise at listening to their eruption of a new track, “Still Counts,” featuring Spank Rock. But We Are: The Guard shouldn’t be surprised. If you invite Spank Rock into your song, you’re going to have a good time. Take a listen.
- STILL COUNTS (FT. SPANK ROCK)
Admittedly, it’s Spank Rock that dominates in “Still Counts.” The Baltimore rapper has total control over the slick electronic song that sounds like it’s blaring an alarm in the background, maybe as a warning for the explosion of the chorus looming ahead. “Still Counts” is a ticking time bomb. It’s provocative, mysterious and very unlike the soft, shy Polica songs I spin on my “getting in the mood” playlists.
Of course it isn’t until you reach the end of the countdown, the center of the synth-alarms, when the song bursts forth like a predator. Drums are set ablaze, and finally, Polica’s presence is made evident with Channy’s charming-as-always vocals. Energetic and lively, “Still Counts” is a wild turn for Polica, but one with a satisfying pay-off. All I can think about is dancing to this in a dingy 90s warehouse party, the kind you see depicted in films where everyone is sweating, and someone is running in the middle of it for some reason.
Or in a film like The Transporter, I don’t know. Makes sense to me.
“Still Counts” is available digitally now, and will also be an exclusive for Record Day (hence the fiery track for such a special musical occasion).
