BEST NEW TRACKS: EZRA FURMAN - RESTLESS YEAR

3/5/15
Ezra Furman “Restless Year”

Out with The Harpoons, in with The Boyfriends. That was Chicago-native Ezra Furman’s thinking at some point this decade, and it’s paid off. Now playing with his new band only for live shows, Furman sounded reinvigorated on both his 2013 releases, and frankly he sounds better than ever on his new single “Restless Year.”

I had thought Mr. Furman peaked with the catchy-but-completely-nonsensical “Take Off Your Sunglasses,” and I’m happy to be proven wrong here. “Restless Year” has the same Vampire Weekend doing 60’s jangle pop feel to it, but there’s actual substance behind it. This song will get stuck in your head and you’ll be singing along with it before you realize what the lyrics are actually saying. I love songs like this, that have a sunny pop sheen with existential angst buried beneath a singsongy chorus. It’s my favorite kind of sad white boy rock. Well done, sir!
