BEST NEW TRACKS: GABRIEL BLACK - SAD BOY
The iconic Kurt Cobain once said, "Thanks for the tragedy, I need it for my art." Sorrow is synonymous with pain and suffering, but for a musician, it can yield beautiful results—Gabriel Black is just the latest example of that fact. The songwriter's debut track "Sad Boy" is a bare and vulnerable low-fi introduction. It's easy listening for the right dim mood.
GABRIEL BLACK - SAD BOY
Only an electric guitar and drums accompany the Los Angeles dweller's candid vocals. He opens his first-ever release with, "Baby ima sad boy/ Driving down a / High way to hell / Thinking 'bout you all night." The DIY quality of the song emanates an innocence to it—like he could almost be an angsty adolescent recording in his parent's garage. And who can't relate to that time when hormones made every feeling that much more dramatic? Who knows, Black might actually be a teenager.
Whoever he is, we're interested to know more. It seems like Black is trying to resurrect the essence of Daniel Johnson and mix it the quintessential "emo" genre, so we'll have to keep listening to hear if he has the chops to turn his art into a career. There is definitely potential.
