Jade Bird - Uh Huh

You’d be forgiven for thinking this decade has been some sort of regurgitated 80’s dystopian nightmare. The US President is a mush-brained septuagenarian celebrity, tensions with Iran, Russia, and Afghanistan are unnervingly high, Tom Cruise is starring in blockbuster action movies, Star Wars dominates pop culture, reverb-soaked synth music is flooding the airwaves, and so on and so forth.

Which means a 90’s revival is on the horizon. Enter calls for a return to the irony of Generation X and a supremely talented young songstress gunning to be the next Alanis Morissette. Jade Bird is a 20 year old indie starlet from North England who burst onto the scene last year with her debut EP Something American. Her latest single “Uh Huh” is a tight, relentlessly punk, raw banger that gets your heart pumping, toes a tapping, and will be playing on loop in your head for weeks on end.

Call it Lilith Fair Revival if you must, but really it’s a kickass jam that showcases the songwriting and talents of an emerging artist. In a year that’s already given us a slew of young female rockers like Snail Mail and Soccer Mom, Jade Bird may be the most promising of them all.

But comparison is the thief of joy. Let’s just enjoy the abundance of rock goddess wealth we have here without elevating one artist above the other.

Oh and be sure to turn the volume up when playing “Uh Huh”.

Bird is currently prepping her debut LP. Whether or not “Uh Huh” will be apart of that project is unclear. Sign me up for repeated binge-listens of that record though if it has the same mixture of electrifying pop rock with a country twist as found here.

Jade is wrapping up a festival run right now before embarking on her first headlining US Tour. The early returns suggest her live shows whip ass. In closing, I’ll present the below video as evidence. Keep scrolling past it for the dates and venues of said tour.

Calvin Paradise is not any one thing. The half-hearted vagabond and forgetful luddite currently resides in Los Angeles and how he spends his time is none of your damned business.
