BEST NEW INDIE: SPELLES - DEAD IN THE WATER
We Are: The Guard declares Halloween early this year. The dead will rise again in Dead In The Water, a spooky, visceral blues song masterminded by Los Angeles’s own SPELLES.
SPELLES - DEAD IN THE WATER
Kathryn Baar, known as her professional alias SPELLES, revived a sound from a bygone era. Viewers of the show Pretty Little Liars might recognize her voice from her unreleased song "Bird In a Cage." Much in the same vein, "Dead In The Water" is a dark and raw composition that transcend just typical blues from decades prior. Rather, it appears in the guise of a spiritual hymn from a previous century. Adorned by modern accouterments such a mainly electronic presentation, this song embodies part Underground Railroad, part millennial transgressions. You don’t necessarily need a history lesson to enjoy this one, though.
SPELLES’s vocals has a ridiculous amount of bravado and power, driving this track from a simple modern blues track to something worthy of being the theme to a new generation of rebels. There is a little Black Keys with a sprinkle of low-end vocal strength of Adele. There is a bright future lying in that golden voice. That raw, guttural sound might not be for everybody, but it is hard to turn away from that intriguing, apocalyptic sound.
Those in Southern California for the summer should check out SPELLES, who will be a part of KCRW’s Summer Nights in July.
