BEST NEW TRACKS: SOLEIMA - PACIFY ME
“I know that everything's gonna be a waste of time,” is a hell of a battle cry to build a pop anthem around, yet Danish star Soleima (Sarah Mariegaard) is up to the challenge, doing just that with surprising ease and inspiring results with “Pacify Me.”
Soleima’s sound is a perfect mix of psychedelic dream pop, indie, and R&B. It’s as interesting and ambitious as it is catchy and danceable.
You can maybe listen to this song once and forget about it. But as soon as you listen to it again it’ll continue to grow like a tumor in your mind until it takes over entirely.
SOLEIMA - PACIFY ME
Hailing from Copenhagen (as in the capital of Denmark, not the chewing tobacco) the young songstress seems poised for a breakthrough beyond her Scandinavian roots. You can hear influences like MØ, Elliphant, Lykke Li, and The Avalanches in her songs. But her sound is very much her own.
“Pacify Me” is the opener off her new EP Bulldog, and it’s an infectious number about not overthinking things and just living in the moment. And sure that’s probably the subtext of every pop song, but this combo of a fantastic beat and Sarah’s hypnotic voice make it feel different. Mariegaard was formerly involved with a hip hop collective, and that connection is readily evident in her production, particularly the percussions.
Fans in Norway and Denmark will be able to catch Soleima at festivals throughout the summer. The rest of us will have to make due with listening to her wonderful brand of off-kilter pop on the streaming service of our choice, hoping and praying that one day she’ll come through and chill.
Or at the very least play some shows on this continent. We’ll also settle for more music from her as soon as it’s ready.
Calvin Paradise is not any one thing. The half-hearted vagabond and forgetful luddite currently resides in Los Angeles and how he spends his time is none of your damned business.
