BEST NEW TRACKS: STRANGE TALK "YOUNG HEARTS"

8/27/14

People are always asking me, so what exactly makes a best new track? I tell them it's sort of like the "art or porn" debate, in that it's hard to define, but you know it when you see it. In the case of Strange Talk's "Young Hearts" however, it's not hard to see what makes it a BNT.

As the lead single from Cast Away, the Aussie quartet's debut album, "Young Hearts" is a soaring synth-pop anthem. Sounding like a hybrid of Passion Pit, Phoenix, and Cut Copy, Strange Talk has written a rallying cry for the youths down under, and really the world round. For younger listeners this song acts as inspiration, a measuring stick of sorts. For the older listener ground down by the passage of time, it offers twinge of nostalgia and a reminder of how little you really need to get by. Or at least that's my synopsis...

verse 1

remember when we were so small
and all the times we used to fall
you never walk before you crawl before you crawl
we wake up and we go to school
together breaking every rule
they say that we're just young and fools, young and fools

pre-chorus

grown ups what do they know
living by the stories on the radio
bad news on the tv
headlines are made of reality

chorus

we're young hearts
look at us go
all we really need is a stereo
we're young hearts
look at us go
there's no stopping us we will carry on

we're young hearts
look at us go
all we really need is a stereo
we're young hearts
look at us go
there's no stopping us we will carry on

na na na na na na na

remember all the memories
and every little fantasy
careless about destiny, destiny
we don't have the time to sleep
there's every possibility
we have got a history, history

pre-chorus

grown ups what do they know
living by the stories on the radio
bad news on the tv
headlines are made of reality

chorus

we're young hearts
look at us go
all we really need is a stereo
we're young hearts
look at us go
there's no stopping us we will carry on

we're young hearts
look at us go
all we really need is a stereo
we're young hearts
look at us go
there's no stopping us we will carry on

chorus x2

we're young hearts
look at us go
all we really need is a stereo
we're young hearts
look at us go
there's no stopping us we will carry on

we're young hearts
look at us go
all we really need is a stereo
we're young hearts
look at us go
there's no stopping us we will carry on
