BEST NEW TRACKS: TAJ RALPH - BEAT THE KEEPER
New releases are starting to match the spring season, and Taj Ralph’s single, “Beat the Keeper,” is no exception. Not much is yet known about the young Australian artist, but his debut track dropped down on us like soft morning dew on the cusp of a warm day. Too poetic? All right, don’t listen to me. Check out “Beat the Keeper” on We Are: The Guard.
TAJ RALPH - BEAT THE KEEPER
Pure molasses. “Beat the Keeper” is nothing short of text-book definition smooth, and Taj Ralph makes the track’s lush composition feel effortless. “Beat the Keeper” starts with lounge vibes, like what you’ll find playing at the Ace Hotel’s lobby & elevator, except with an intensely strong chillwave ambience. There’s some jazz stylings going on, too, but the jewel in this track is the chorus, and how Taj seamlessly blends his sleek, youthful vocals over a rich, electronic track. I haven’t heard something so attractively electronica like “Beat the Keeper” since Gorillaz’ “Empire Ants.”
Then there’s the guitar solo towards the end, that Taj introduces to us like an improv’d bedroom jam: “One, two, three, four…” and keeps the smooth stylings of “Beat the Keeper” afloat, until the song’s twinkling final seconds.
All this accumulates as strong evidence towards Taj’s musical talents. Did you know he’s in his teens? When I was a teenager, I was roleplaying on Livejournal. The point, though: We should be expecting bigger, brighter things from Taj Ralph in the months to come. In the meantime, keep refreshing his Soundcloud page.
