Donnie Trumpet & the Social Experiment “Sunday Candy” - A Short Film

Who is Donnie Trumpet is not some crummy Raymond Chandler ripoff, but the question I asked when the amazing video for “Sunday Candy” showed up in my inbox a few days ago.

Apparently Donnie Trumpet is Nico Segal, the trumpet player in Chance the Rapper’s band The Social Experiment. Why his name leads this song, I still haven’t figured out. Although the trumpet hook on this song is pretty dope.

The video for “Sunday Candy” is a "short film," according to those who made it. And while calling a music video a "short film" always prompts a series of eye rolls from me, this one actually lives up to its billing. Directed by Austin Vesely and written by Chance, “Sunday Candy” feels like you’re on set at a musical and it's the big number in which the two leads confess their cute-as-can-be love for one another. The video, excuse, me, the film features a dizzying amount of moving sets to go along with some jaw-dropping choreography. It actually is a short film!

Now if only they’d made it longer.

“Sunday Candy” will be on Chance and Co’s new record, Surf, which they plan to release FOR FREE!!! later this year. He’s been rumored to be working with Pharrell Williams, Frank Ocean, and Rick Rubin, among others. Here’s to hoping some of those collabs make the album, or that we at least get to hear them at some point.

No release date yet for Surf. We'll let you know soon as one gets tagged to it. Leave your number in the comments so we can reach you quickly.
