OK Go - Upside Down and Inside Out

Started on the treadmill now we’re here. Ok Go long ago became a good enough band that they don’t need these stunt videos, but we’re all the better for the fact that they keep making them. Their latest viral video, “Upside Down & Inside Out,” is the best yet.

This video truly has it all. Piñata? Check. Disco balls? Check. Paint-filled balloons? Check. Funding from Russia’s biggest domestic airline S7, the former “Tolmachevo United Squadron,” so they could shoot the whole thing in zero gravity? Check.

True to form, the indie rock quartet does all their on stunts and doesn’t rely on any post-editing tricks or green screens. What you see is what you get, and what you get fucking rules. This could not rule anymore. Nothing I could say will in any way improve this, so just get to watching it. And then re-watch it about five straight times. If you’re interested in how it was all done, read below.

OK GO “UPSIDE DOWN & INSIDE OUT”

S7 took Ok Go and their crew on around 20  “vomit comets,” in which zero gravity is achieved by having the plane continually dip up and down repeatedly. “Upside Down & Inside Out” is off Ok Go’s underrated 2014 LP, Hungry Ghosts, and sounds like one of the best Flaming Lips songs I’ve heard in a minute. You can read a behind the scenes account of how the video was made here.

In parting, here are the lyrics to the song that’ll be stuck in your head for the next 24 hours:

upside down and inside out
and you can feel it.
upside down and inside out
and you can feel it, feel it.
don't know where your eyes are
but they're not doin' what you said.
don't know where your mind is baby
but you're better off without it.

inside down and upside out
and you can feel it.
don't stop.
can't stop.
it's like an airplane goin' down.
i wish i had said the things you thought that i had said.
gravity's just a habit that you're really sure you can't break.

so when you met the new you,
were you scared?
were you cold?
were you kind?
yeah when you met the new you,
did someone die inside?

don't stop.
can't stop.
it's like a freight train.
don't stop.
can't stop.
it's like an airplane goin' down.
don't know where your eyes are
but they're not doin' what you said.
don't know where your mind is baby
but you're better off without it.

looks like it's time to decide.
are you here?
are you now?
is this it?
all of those selves that you tried;
wasn't one of 'em good enough?

'cause you're upside down and inside out
and you can feel it.
inside down and upside out
and you can feel it, feel it.

don't stop.
can't stop.
it's like a freight train.
don't stop.
can't stop
until you feel it goin' down.
i wish i had said the things you thought that i had said.
gravity's just a habit that you're really sure you can't break.

upside down and inside out
and you can feel it
don't stop
can't stop
until you feel it goin' down
upside down and inside out
and you can feel it
don't stop
can't stop
until you feel it goin' down
