BEST NEW VIDEOS: TEGAN AND SARA - U-TURN

Tegan and Sara - U-Turn

I first knew I loved the sisters Quin when I saw them at the now defunct San Diego Street Scene in 2009. The girls just finished playing a cover of Rhianna’s “Umbrella,” when one of the identical twins made the joke, “That was a song by my future wife Rhianna.” As I laughed I realized that I’ve made that exact joke before. It’s like we’re the same person(s).

I’ve probably told this story before, possibly on this here website, but it’s worth repeating. Namely because it’s one of my favorites.

Which brings us to today and “U-Turn,” the new video from Tegan and Sara, as well as the second single off their 8th studio LP, Love You to Death. Much like “Boyfriend,” “U-Turn” finds the band doubling down on the synth pop, Cyndi Lauper aesthetic they tried on for 2013’s Heartthrob, and while neither of those songs is “Closer,” they’re both pretty good in their own right.

Seth Bogart directed the 80’s inspired music video for “U-Turn.” It features Canada’s greatest sisters clad in leather and making their way around the Blue’s Clues version of Los Angeles. The song kicks and the visuals work. What else would you expect at this point from these two?

TEGAN AND SARA - U-TURN

Love You to Death is out June 3rd on Warner Bros. In closing, here are the lyrics “U-Turn”:

Never been the type to leave much room for anyone to speak
Always been about what I want, listen to me while I preach
Never been the kind to make much space for emotions in a fight
Anything I didn't wanna hear, I just preached 'til what was right

But you, you got me on the line
Told me that you think it's time
Make a change or this is gonna stall
Shape up or you'll drop me like a call

Now I wanna write a love song
Even though you never ever ask me for one
Write you a letter, send sweet poems
Ask you for forgiveness, tell you I was wrong
Sit myself down, bring my pride in
And start to focus, change who I've been
Give me a second, let me u-turn
Write you the love song you've earned

I been at this so long I can barely stand to think it now
Every second of my life was was packed until I broke them down
I've been selfish so long I don't know why you would ever stay
Every minute you've been here, I've been pushing you and your love away

But you, you got me on the line
Told me that you think it's time
Make a change or this is gonna stall
Shape up or you'll drop me like a call

Now I wanna write a love song
Even though you never ever ask me for one
Write you a letter, send sweet poems
Ask you for forgiveness, tell you I was wrong
Sit myself down, bring my pride in
And start to focus, change who I've been
Give me a second, let me u-turn
Write you the love song you've earned

Every time I think I hurt you
All I have to do is think through
What I want, list your virtues
Apologize, I don't deserve you
Every time I know I hurt you
All I have to do is run through
What I need, list your virtues
Apologize, I don't deserve you

Now I wanna write a love song
Even though you never ever ask me for one
Write you a letter, send sweet poems
Ask you for forgiveness, tell you I was wrong
Sit myself down, bring my pride in
And start to focus, change who I've been
Give me a second, let me u-turn
Write you the love song you've earned
Give me a second, let me u-turn
Write you the love song you've earned
