Best of Indie Week 31 (14 Tracks!) 2012

Best of Indie

In this year of our Lord 2012, as we gather round our moving picture boxes to gaze upon the impossibly toned bodies participating in the London Olympiad, don’t we need some music to grace our eardrums as well? Here at LA Music Blog, we’re still just trying to stop laughing at Mr. Bean’s ridiculous piano performance! BUT we did manage to pull ourselves together long enough to filter through all the shitty music the internet offered up to us this week.

Hudson Mohawke and Lunice teamed up to release an EP under the name TNGHT, and it’s awesome. The track below is a “preview” of it, so it has a little bit of everything. Lana Del Rey, henceforth to be known as “LDR,” covered Nirvana at a recent Australia show, and I didn’t hate it. Bat For Lashes wrote a song about a girl. Cry Wolf remixed my all-time favorite The Knife song. All that and more, below! Read on, dear readers...

Purity Ring - Fineshrine

Totally getting all butterflies about the new album.  And have you seen Purity Ring live?  Must see.  They are the “enchanted forest” of indie.  (WTF does that mean?  Not sure but I feel their live set I would find in a forest shire somewhere.

Crystal Castles - Plague

CC is back!  With the friggin plague no less.  OK.  Let’s all get sick together.

2:54 - Sugar

2:54 - Creeping

Two of my favorites from 2:54, a band of 2 Dalston based sisters.  The band is named after their favorite exact moment in minutes and seconds on a particular Melvins song.  Cool.   Not sure about the rest of the album but these tracks -- nice.

The Tough Alliance - Koka-Kola Veins

One of our new Curators, Dalle00, just turned us on to this delicious track...which while not bang spanking new is still spanking.  My favorite lyric on the song “Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah.”  Yeah.

Passion Pit - Carried Away

Besides the obvious 1st single “Take A Walk,” this song “Carried Away” is BY FAR the only other good song on the album.  Those 2 songs = Yes.  The album = No Thanks!  Read our snarkilicious review here.

Beat Radio - The House That Heaven Built (Japandroids cover)

Compliments of www.prettymuchamazing.com we stumbled upon this Japandroids cover.  (Did you know that Google Documents does not auto correct “Japandroids?”  Cool).

Lana Del Rey - “Heart Shaped Box (Live)”

So LDR covered “Heart Shaped Box.” I can hear Kurt rolling over in his grave. What do we think of Lana? I finally listened to her song with A$AP Rocky and I sort of loved it. Oops.

TNGHT - “TNGHT EP”

This is so filthy, I can’t even... Producers Hudson Mohawke and Lunice teamed up to form Bass supergroup TNGHT, and if this doesn’t make you want to buy the EP, there is no hope for you.

The Knife - “You Make Me Like Charity (Cry Wolf Remix)”

Cry Wolf cheated because they remixed my favorite The Knife song, so obviously I’m going to post it. They give it a nice dubstep flava with a little breakbeat thrown in for good measure!

Bear Mountain - “Two Step”

This is the song I want to hear when I’m walking onto the Polo Fields for the first time at Coachella this year. Shit, guess I better buy a ticket then!

Bat For Lashes - “Laura”

Hmm who is this song about? Laura Branigan? Is she good pals with Lana Del Rey and wrote a song about her? The video suggests it’s about a fallen stage star.

Royal Teeth - “Wild”

Why don’t you let New Orleans natives Royal Teeth soundtrack your rooftop drinking this week? Their sunny indie pop is practically perfect for that activity in every way!

Royal Teeth - "Heartbeats”

Another great one from RoyalTeeth via their cover of The Knife’s “Heartbeats.”

That concludes our column at LA Music Blog BitCandy this week. Your next task, should you choose to accept it, is to load these up on your Zune, get outside, and get training for the next Olympics! You know you wish you were there. I mostly just wish I could go party with Michael Phelps. He seems like a fun guy. See you next week, fatties!
