Best Songs Ever: Faith No More 'Epic'

It's it. What is it? It's it. What is it? It's it. What is it? It's... Okay, you get the point. To this very day, music fans have failed to solve the mystery at the beating heart of BitCandy's best in music page... What is it? It's it...:

Epic” was lifted from Faith No More's third studio album, The Real Thing. Having gone through a series of singers, from Courtney Love to Chuck Mosley, this was the California band's first single to feature “the man of a thousand voices,” Mike Patton. It was also their breakthrough hit, peaking at #9 on the Hot 100 in 1990 - Faith No More's first and last Top 10 smash.

This was one of the first songs to blend heavy metal with funk, rap and classical music - a recipe that looks all too repulsive on paper. But, against all odds, it worked - even if it was responsible for that subsequent wave, no, shit-storm of “nu-metal” artists trying, and failing, to emulate what Faith No More kick-started in the early 90s. We are looking at you, Korn:

When did Faith No More become Nu Metal?

Back in the day, the official video sparked mega-controversy, because it featured a shot of a dying fish, which Faith No More reportedly stole from the Icelandic goddess, Björk. Deceased trout aside, “Epic,” with its Dalí aesthetics and exploding pianos, was to be found on constant loop on MTV in the early 90s:

In 2009, Faith No More broke the internet, when they announced that they would be reforming after 10 long years. Queue live footage of a time-worn, bloated, but for goodness sake, still face-melting Mike Patton and co (kudos if you spotted Roddy Bottum of Imperial Teen) at Coachella:

Can you feel it, see it, hear it today?
If you can't, then it doesn't matter anyway
You will never understand it 'cause it happens too fast
And it feels so good, it's like walking on glass
It's so cool, it's so hip, it's alright
It's so groovy, it's outta sight
You can touch it, smell it, taste it so sweet
But it makes no difference 'cause it knocks you off your feet
You want it all but you can't have it
It's cryin', bleedin', lying on the floor
So you lay down on it and you do it some more
You've got to share it, so you dare it
Then you bare it and you tear it
You want it all but you can't have it
It's in your face but you can't grab it
It's alive, afraid, a lie, a sin
It's magit, it's tragic, it's a loss, it's a win
It's dark, it's moist, it's a bitter pain
It's sad it happened and it's a shame
You want it all but you can't have it
It's in your face but you can't grab it
What is it?
It's it
What is it?...
