DEATH OF THE MASHUP? FT. CARLOS SERRANO “FEEL STRONGER (KANYE WEST VS THE WEEKEND)”
The mashup is a dying art. The most prominent pioneering composition style of the millennium has become all but obsolete over the past few years. Girl Talk hasn’t put out one of his hyper-kinetic albums/mixtapes since 2008. Outside of The Hood Internet, few people seem to be dabbling in the genre anymore.
Part of this probably has something to do with Soundcloud, who’s killing mashups from upcoming and unknown DJs via crushing accounts using unauthorized content. All of which means DJs' bootlegs and edits are only being heard at the club, which isn’t a great recipe for sustainability. It’s also possible that the aforementioned Girl Talk took the mashup to its logical conclusion. Or maybe the notion that blending other people’s music into your own creation isn’t really art or that creative has prevailed.
Regardless of all that, some people are still working that mashup grind, like San Diego human Carlos Serrano, whose “Feel Stronger” has reminded us why we were so captivated by these things in the first place.
Get ready to fall in love again.

Someone get Gregg Gillis and tell him he’s got a challenger. And that that mixtape he did with Freeway showed some real promise for his original material.
Here are the two songs Mr. Serrano threw together, in case you’ve been living in a hole the past decade or so or just have a strong aversion to all things pop.
