ELECTRO MUSIC - WEEK 18
Alright, it’s May. Finally, right? It feels like we’ve all been collectively waiting for this point. I used to live in SoCal, where May was the signifier that summer was really here. It’s hot as hell and you just want some summer dance tunes for your pool parties and your bbqs and your beach adventures. But now I live in Denver where it’s STILL goddamn snowing. So I guess I’m still listening to that dark techno to help keep me warm by the fire. NAH I'M JUST PLAYIN'! Who cares what weather music is listened to at? We all just close our eyes and dream of locations anyways — Thai beaches or forest sanctuaries or 300,000 people at a overpriced festival! All good!
Now for those tunes I’ve been promising you. New music from Galantis, Kygo, Friend Within, Boston Bun and Noisia. WOW!
GALANTIS - LOUDER HARDER BETTER
Galantis know how to churn out emotive progressive house monsters that resonate with 17-22 year olds going through their first couple years of raving. They even know how to connect with a jaded 29 year old that thinks emotions died when Swedish House Mafia broke up. So, they’re perfect.
TOPI & TWINE - GREY MATTER
I forget what it’s like to rave. To need the next song to be so fucking big that you lose your shit and can’t help but dance as hard and fast as the last one. I tend to like following a groove for an hour set. But hey, I ain’t making the big bucks. We need songs like this, otherwise Hard festivals like, wouldn’t even exist,
KYGO - RAGING FT. KODALINE
Mufucka knows how to write a pop song. That shit’s UN-DE-NIABLE. With each new hit single the Norwegian cements himself further into the zeitgeist. It’s funny that he cites Avicii as his #1 influence, he’s on a very similar career trajectory. Next year he’ll show up at Ultra performing his songs exclusively on the pan flute and then have a nervous breakdown and have to stop touring. Let’s hope not?!
NOISIA - THE NOMAD (WITH MONO/POLY)
Bass Music took a weird turn somewhere along the line. And Noisia aren’t one to shy away, that’s for sure. The threesome (along with Mono/Poly) took the turn and ran with it hard. This track belongs in every weird bass artist's set all summer long, okay? I was surprised to see Noisia headlining Infrasound festival this year, but after hearing this track I think I know why.
FRIEND WITHIN - MOVE ME
Oh wow, this funky nu-disco track is outside the box for both Friend Within and Dirtybird. This has got a groove that just won’t quit and I’m glad the label saw it for the gem it is. One of my favorite labels releasing music from one of my favorite artists — and it’s THE SHIT!? Check please.
TODD TERJE & THE OLSENS - BABY DO YOU WANNA BUMP (DANIEL MALOSO RADIO EDIT)
Todd Terje’s bizarre, funky disco tunes are the top of the game. And I’m absolutely ecstatic that we’re getting new music from the master— he’s out there touring a couple of dates this summer with his live back-up band, The Olsens, and we should be grateful that our ears live in the time that they are given the pleasure of enjoying his unique, beautiful sensibilities. #fanboy
RICHIE BLACKER - POLTERGEIST
Sometimes you just come across a house music tune that’s instantly infectious. This tune is stuck in my head permanently now, and I’m sure I could listen to it played for 4 straight hours and not even realize they hadn’t switched tracks in a while. Props to Skream and his Ofunsoundmind label for dropping this one just for me.
SYLCMYK - RAINBOWIST
This feels like that first kind of special I felt when I first heard Cashmere Cat. Or when Ryan Hemsworth’s beats first graced my ears, how I know his silly, video game inspired beats were going to be around for a while. I haven’t been this excited for anyone making beats in a long while. This is interesting, fresh and playful, a soundcloud FULL of gems. I’m not going to even bring up that this is the most subtle chiptune has ever been. Is this this chiptune crossover act we’ve been waiting for?
CLARE MAGUIRE - ELIZABETH TAYLOR (BOSTON BUN REMIX)
Clare Maguire’s Elizabeth Taylor is that new sad pop song you’ve been hearing absolutely everywhere without even knowing you’ve been hearing it. Haven’t heard it? Now you have. Stuck in your head? Exactly. Girl has got quite the voice and a hook that belongs in a museum. Of course Boston Bun puts the French Touch on this and spins it into a dance floor ready party. Expect to hear lots of this out there.
DOCTOR P & FLUX PAVILION - FUCKERS
Oh take me back to 2011. Doctor P & Flux Pavilion haven’t released music together in 5 years and dubstep/bass music has been missing their peanut butter and jelly ever since. This is a three track surprise EP from the duo and it’s awesome to see them together again. We’ve all been collectively missing Flux’s clean bass and Doctor P’s heavy bleeps coming together to make perfect tunes. "Fuckers" is by far the best track off the Party Drink Smoke EP. While the other two may hit harder or have the hook we’re talking about later this summer - I’m a fan of "Fuckers"’ use of a Vine meme and the clean combination of both their sounds. To many more together, boys!
DO YOU KNOW WHAT TIME IT IS? I LOST MY WATCH THIS WEEKEND AT THE CLUB.
About Kurt Kroeber
From deep within the murky depths of the Los Angeles River emerged a creature: 50% raver, 50% comedian, 10% Robotcop. Kurt Kroeber doesn’t own a dog, operates Soundbleed (the world’s only dance party comedy talk show rave), and is down to party with you. Come up some time and say “Hey dude!” But definitely make sure to casually drop the secret Illuminati password.
