FAVORITE INDIE POP: ALICE MERTON - NO ROOTS
On behalf of We Are: The Guard, welcome to the rest of the world, Alice Merton. This transnational singer is finally getting the international treatment with her debut single called "No Roots."
ALICE MERTON - NO ROOTS
Alice Merton was born in Germany and grew up in Canada and Great Britain. She has already tasted chart success on European charts with "No Roots," which came off of her debut EP of the same name. She now takes her sultry and seasoned vocals across the pond back to North America. Her German and Irish roots remind me of international actor, Michael Fassbender, who shares the same ethnic complexities as Merton. However, her musical prowess, essentially her voice, will be her distinguishing and defining factor in a saturated pop music market. Already, Merton is quite a hit in Germany and neighboring Austria, placing second and third place on their pop charts, respectively. It helps that she is fluent in German, as well.
"No Roots" is an autobiographical track that speaks about her traveling and gypsy nature. Her vocals have a lot of layers, thick and sultry, that hover somewhere between Florence Welch and Sia. There is urgency and theatrics in her delivery. Complicated is a correct word about Merton's background, and "No Roots" exemplifies that notion even further. Surely, we have barely scratched the surface of what Merton is capable of, musically.
