FAVORITE INDIE POP: GREY - WINGS CLIPPED FT. AVRIL LAVIGNE AND ANTHONY GREEN
We Are: The Guard readers, I’m going to need you to stop what you’re doing and read this post, because this moment’s been a long time coming since 2014. Long gone is the era of second-hand embarrassment for Canadian jewel Avril Lavigne (Remember “Hello Kitty?” LOL). The punk pop princess is back in her prime, and all it took was an electronic duo and Anthony Green. Listen to Grey’s “Wings Clipped” below, and revel in the most perplexing and solid song I’ve heard to date— as if 2017 couldn’t get stranger.
GREY - WINGS CLIPPED FEAT. AVRIL LAVIGNE AND ANTHONY GREEN
Is it the acoustic composition that continuously builds through the verses that makes this song so infectious? That Avril sings with so much bleakness dripping from her voice that I’m transported back to my eighth grade emo days? That Circa Survive’s Anthony Green matches her with equal desperation in his voice? Or maybe it’s just that electronic duo Grey’s got a unique vision and the chorus is such a thrilling burst of mesmerizing glitches that it’s impossible not to leave this on repeat.
The collaboration is nothing short of random as hell. But then again, Skrillex did start his musical career in a screamo band, after all. “Wings Clipped” is a level-up for electronic genres everywhere. The new single starts off sounding like a safe Paramore track and rages forth like a Transformers movie theme song, and I LOVE IT.
“Wings Clipped” comes from the just released debut EP from Grey, Chameleon. Listen to it on Soundcloud and catch the pair touring with Zedd this month.
