FAVORITE INDIE POP - WEEK 31
So, question for you. When was the last time you received good news? Been awhile, huh. Well, the reason I ask is because all of us here at We Are: The Guard have some pretty exciting news for you all. Being that it’s Wednesday and we’re all counting down the hours until Friday we’re sharing with you ten of the most standout indie pop songs of the week. The beats from the following singles will help you pass the time in a more enjoyable manner. Hang on tight to your swivel chair or whatever you’re sitting on, we’re about to jump into music from SG Lewis, Charli XCX, Ivan Dorn, and more.
SG LEWIS - SMART ALECK KILL FT COL3TRANE
Producer SG Lewis is making waves this summer with his latest piece “Smart Aleck Kill’” which was co-written with up and coming eighteen year old London artist Col3trane. Col3trane’s vocals are featured and are spot on for perfect for the dark tone that has been set in place with the straightforward lyrics and playing on dark vibes. This one is meant to be savored from start to end.
WOLF ALICE - YUCK FOO
One act that will get your blood moving is Wolf Alice. Their return marked by the brash noise of “Yuk Foo” is sensational and we simply can’t get enough of it. Those who of you who have listened to the single can appreciate the message and accept the direction the band took to portray anger and the zero tolerance attitude. Now watch as the band tears it up in a dark basement! Gosh I miss the good old days of moshing!
CHARLI XCX - BOYS
So much meat and I’m over here starving! My gawd, Charli XCX has given us a visual feast of some of the biggest artists/influencers. From Diplo to Jack Antonoff to Khalid to Brendon Urie to Mark Ronson...the list goes on. Grab yourself a quiet little spot and a few napkins to wipe the drool as you watch the official video for “Boys.” You might need to play it over and over again because one time is simply not enough.
KESHA - LEARN TO LET GO
Kesha’s growth and new found freedom is heard in every note of her latest music including “Learn To Let Go.” You don’t have to have been through what Kesha went through to be able to appreciate and connect with the heartfelt powerful message of her new identity. If life throws you a fast pitch just “ Woah….learn to let go...Live and learn, never forget it.” #AllHailKesha #Preachit
KENDRICK LAMAR - LOYALTY FT. RIHANNA
The visuals for the video of Kendrick Lamar’s undoubtedly impressive single is better than any blockbuster movie out in theaters. Two lovers caught in nasty web of gangstas …. How will it end? Will the mob kill the female love interest played by the ‘Battleships’ talented actress Rihanna? Spoiler: If you have been following the storyline from lamar’s album Damn, this here is the twist of it all.
IVAN DORN - BEVERLY
Ukrainian indie pop artist Ivan Dorn debuts on to the American scene with a sound straight out of the 80s in “Beverly.” The track carries a heavy Euro inspired beat that is cooler than any flamingo floaty you’ve been on. As an individual with a track record known for pushing boundaries in his home land, it won’t be long before America uncovers the hidden magic behind Dorn’s creative work.
SWIMMING GIRLS - TASTES LIKE MONEY
British shoegaze band Swimming Girls debut their presence with “Taste Like Money.” With a sound straight out of one of John Hughe’s films the four piece act makes one think that their future is very promising. Since first appearances mean everything in this industry they have a two thumbs up from us and leave us itching for more.
SHY LUV - FIRST FIRES
Just close your eyes and bob your head as your mind travels elsewhere. “First Fires” by Manchester steamy duo Shy Luv is the perfect theme song for your day. Nothing at this moment matters except you and the dancing vibes from these guys. Take a listen and be prepared to move.
SKRILLEX & POO BEAR - WOULD YOU EVER
Poo Bear is the man behind most of Justin Bieber's hit songs including “Where Are U Now,” but he’s done with the Biebs and moving on to bigger better things such as a solo career, and here to help him out with a shimmery backdrop is non other than Skrillex. If I had five dollars in my pocket I’d place my bet on Poo Bear making a very good career as an indepent.
ELOHIM & WHETHAN - SLEEPY EYES
The L.A. based producer Elohim and collaborator Whethan want you to just “jam out” to “Sleepy Eyes.” But with it’s laid back vibe all you may feel like doing is playing it over and over until the start of Fall. The lyrics are as calming as the mellow tropical groove, but there’s really no need for me to tell you why you should listen to it because the track speaks for itself.
About Beca Arredondo
Beca Arredondo is easily unamused with all things not related to her interests. On her good days you can catch her avoiding the California sun and glued to her Mac plotting the next big thing. If you happen to run into her on the street and notice her wearing headphones do NOT disturb her. She is not responsible for any possible damage. Aside from the above she's very sweet and perky and responds well to good music and food.
