BEST NEW VIDEO: HOZIER "TAKE ME TO CHURCH"

12/19/13

We like being as irreverent and cynical as anyone here at Bitcandy, but we're going to at least try and take the best music video, "Take Me To Church" by Hozier, seriously, since the subject matter kinda of demands it.

Born on St. Patricks Day in County Wicklow, Ireland Andrew Hozier-Byrne seems more like a nationalistic superhero than an up and coming singer/songwriter. His moving, bluesy debut EP, Take Me To Church, dropped this July to critical acclaim. The title track got the official video treatment. It's spectacular. I'm going to go ahead and give people who want to view this video SPOILER FREE a chance to go watch it now. I'd recommend this course of action, then check back here to figure out the purpose behind this stunning work of art.

SPOILER ALERTS BEYOND THIS POINT

Hozier's "Take Me To Church" is a great song, but the video is the reason we're here. This video is a political statement, and a very poignant one. Usually I hate when politics and art combine; it almost always seems disingenuous, but there are exceptions to all rules. "Take Me To Church" is a direct response to the tragic increase in organized violence against the LGBT community in Russia. According to Ireland's State, "Take Me To Church":

"… references the recent increase of [organized] attacks and torturing of homosexuals in Russia, which is subsequent to a long, hateful, and oppressive political campaign against the LGBT community. The song was always about humanity at its most natural, and how that is undermined ceaselessly by religious [organizations] and those who would have us believe they act in its interests."

The video chronicles the day of two young gay lovers who find themselves on the receiving end of some homophobic violence. Watch it below:

HOZIER "TAKE ME TO CHURCH"

Hoizier's debut EP, Take Me To Chuch, is out now via Rubyworks. You can name your price for this gem over on his bandcamp. We don't want to tell you how to live your life, but you should at least pay SOMETHING for this, if for no other reason than the fact that Andrew seems like a pretty great guy.

Lyrics for Hozier "Take Me To Church" are below:

My lover's got humor
She's the giggle at a funeral
Knows everybody's disapproval
I should've worshipped her sooner
If the Heavens ever did speak
She is the last true mouth piece
Every Sunday's getting more bleak
A fresh poison each week
We were born sick, you heard them say it
My church offers no absolutes
She tells me 'worship in the bedroom'
The only heaven I'll be sent to
Is when I'm alone with you
I was born sick, but I love it
Command me to be well

Amen. Amen. Amen

Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life

If I'm a pagan of the good times
My lover's the sunlight
To keep the Goddess on my side
She demands a sacrifice
To drain the whole sea
Get something shiny
Something meaty for the main course
That's a fine looking high horse
What you got in the stable?
We've a lot of starving faithful
That looks tasty
That looks plenty
This is hungry work

Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins so you can sharpen your knife
Offer me my deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life

No masters or kings when the ritual begins
There is no sweeter innocence than our gentle sin
In the madness and soil of that sad earthly scene
Only then I am human
Only then I am clean

Amen. Amen. Amen

Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins so you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life

Thanks for stopping by Bitcandy, where we've got a stable full of fine looking high-horses.
