INDIE CHRISTMAS: ALXXA - IT'S THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR
Have you ever suffered a bit of cognitive dissonance, listening to the original “It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year?” Sure, it sounds nice, with all the talk of roasting marshmallows, jingle bells, Christmas caroling, and gay, happy meetings. And yet, the stiff, stilted, self-conscious way it’s sung completely contradicts the message. It sounds about as warm as Oslo in January and as cozy as a church pew.
Delaware’s alxxa is truly a winter wonderland, by way of comparison. First of all, Alex Saad’s soulful vocals jazz up the traditionally rigid whitebread chorale of the original. Secondly, the electro-pop instrumentals place Alxxa’s updated version in an evocative setting, with ethereal synths glowing like Christmas lights reflecting on snowbanks, all while groaning sub-bass and a wicked glitch hop beat threaten to pull you under like too much eggnog.
ALXXA - IT'S THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR
Alxxa cites Selena Gomez, Tove Lo, Sylvan Esso, and Florence And The Machine as formative influences. By this time next year, she could be as big as any of them. That’d be the greatest gift We Are: The Guard could hope for. Santa, are you listening?
In case dear ol’ Santa doesn’t receive the memo, be sure to grab We Are: The Guard Indie Christmas compilation available here: https://WeAreTheGuard.lnk.to/indiechristmas
