BEST NEW TRACKS: MØ " SAY YOU'LL BE THERE (SPICE GIRLS COVER)"

2/18/14

We were one of the first blogs to give Danish heroine MØ her due over a year ago. So when she unleashed her b*tchin’ cover of the Spice Girls “Say You’ll Be There,” we were ready to call it a best new track before we’d even heard it.

And then we listened to it. It made us think of the Malcolm Gladwell book Blink, which asserts that your first instinct is usually correct. This cover rules and is a complete transformation of the original pop classic. Like most of MØ’s music, this cut is a sultry affair that is flooded with reverb. The Danish songstress finds a bit of sadness and desperation that wasn’t in the original. This is the best type of cover, one that reminds you why you love the original, while adding something new to the equation. Yes this is “Say You’ll Be There” like you’ve never heard it before, but it’s more than that. This is an artist taking a song they love and making it their own.
