Mr Jukes - Angels/Your Love

Mr Jukes is a new musical project, but the man behind the funk, Jack Steadman of indie band Bombay Bicycle Club, has been involved in music for years. Steadman’s passion has always been jazz and funk however, and We Are: The Guard are keen on the musical explosion caused by diving back into his roots. Check out the new track, “Angels/Your Love.”

MR JUKES - ANGELS/YOUR LOVE FT. BJ THE CHICAGO KID

“Angels/Your Love” embodies pure, organic chemistry, like finally hooking up with your crush or having a perfect Saturday night out, complete with stiff drinks and a live band at the bar, you know -- one that’s actually worth your time. The brass ensemble is booming, and the lush vocals of the choir are harmonic, magnetic. The first half of Mr Jukes’ track is thus aptly named.

But let’s talk about the guest vocals of BJ the Chicago Kid, because the moment when his crooning drifts into the mix is the focal point of the song. But I’ve always been partial to BJ; he’s got a knack for delivering some much-needed soul onto tracks, most notably hip hop features. You can argue then that “Angels/Your Love” didn’t exactly need BJ’s embellishing, but in my eyes, the collaboration is seamless, and takes the track to a higher level with each of BJ’s improvised octave. BJ’s vocals and jazz pair together like cheese and fine wine.

The debut of Mr Jukes’ album is out early summer, and will be titled “God First.” Are we in for a religious awakening? Probably. For now, listen to “Angels/Your Love” on his Soundcloud.
