NEW EDM - WEEK 13
Heyyyyyyyyyyy…. What do you get if you cross the world’s best dance music tunes and a dumb writer writing dumb things about them? This Week’s Best of Dance Music Post on BitCandy! What do you get if you cross really good music and really bad ad-riddled platforms— soundcloud and youtube. What do you get if you cross things that seem like jokes and things that actually aren’t? This introduction! That was stupid!
For your ears only, amazing music from Pumpkin, Seven Lions, SBTRKT and Soulwax.
PUMPKIN - LIVE AT LIGHTNING IN A BOTTLE 2013
Dance Music lost a really special one this weekend. Pumpkin passed away this weekend after a fatal car crash on his way to a festival in Texas. In my little corner of the Dance Music World Pumpkin was as important as they got. He was a bouncy, love-hop, house music selector with amazing taste and some of the funkiest, silliest, most playful remixes and edits. If Pumpkin was at a festival the whole squad would roll out and smile for an hour (or if we were lucky more). Do Lab, Lightning in a Bottle, Shambhala, Serenity Gathering, Team Good Vibes all lost one of their greatest, closest and best spirited. He’s got too much good music to pick just one track so I went with the set that made me fall in love with his positive attitude and amazing taste.
LINDSEY LOWEND & JONAH BASEBALL - JEREMY'S PET PEEVE
Let’s start this day off right with some weird silly playful SNES influenced electronic jazz from my absolute two favorite weird silly playful producers. Lindsey Lowend and Jonah Baseball probably had more fun making this in the studio than I do… ever.
A-MINOR - EMOTIONS
This groovy tropical tech-house tune is sure to light up beach parties and late night deep parties for the next couple of months. Normally a track like this easily gets lost in the fold unless it’s being spun regularly by one of the legends. I think this one has got some legs.
SBTRKT - I FEEL YOUR PAIN (FEAT. D.R.A.M. & MABEL)
Though SBTRKT seems to making a big deal that this full-length album is not an album, but rather a collection of music he’s been making just to get stuff out, this feels fully realized to me. "I Feel Your Pain" is a beautiful minimal beat with beautiful vocals from from D.R.A.M. & Mabel. If this is a SBTRKT B-Side consider me, beside myself.
PEER KUSIV - STORCH
This one-two punch of songs belongs at BPM festival. It’s awesome to hear patient tech-house tunes getting the play they deserve. This has got to be the influence of Burning Man and Desert Hearts and all those niche house parties. Lovin it, no complaints.
SUGARBEATS - ABOUT US FEAT. MUZZY BEAR & VERONICA ROCKSTAR
SugarBeats may be the world’s next funk hotness. This album lies somewhere between Griz’s sexy sax funkiness and SOPHIE’s freak-pop sensibilities. Every track on this album is a hit, but "About Us feat. Muzzy Bear and Veronica RockStar" starts the album off with a tone that’ll set the scene for the whole thing. This may be the perfect fusion of pop and funk and it’s all right here.
SEVEN LIONS - SUMMER OF THE OCCULT
Guitar-driven Heavy Metal influenced drum & bass from one of Bass Music’s best and brightest? Sign me the fuck up. Seven Lions’ new EP dropped this week and it’s unlike anything we’ve heard from him yet. Mad respect for producers who keep trying that newness and having it pay off in spades.
SOULWAX - HEAVEN SCENT (FEAT. CHLOE SEVIGNY)
Sure the Dewale brothers have been playing as 2 Many DJs and making the most amazing edits out there, AND they just dropped their Belgica soundtrack where they design and perform as 15 different bands ranging from British indie rock to psychobilly but this is the first NEW Soulwax music we’ve heard since 2007. And its glorious minimal funky beat with spoken word from one of the greatest actresses out there? Worth the wait? Hell no. GIVE ME MORE NOW.
DJ KRUSH'S SUNRISE PERFORMANCE AT TOKYO'S ZOJO-JI TEMPLE
If ya got the patience for a nine-minute, theramin-scratching, turntablism-beat-creation sunrise set... then this is pretty astounding. If you don’t, then hey, I get it. EDM is for the ADD generation. We can’t all focus on beautiful art.
KASKADE LIVE AT UMF MIAMI 2016
Kaskade brings it hard to every major festival / show he’s got. Each one is different and beautiful in its own unique way like a headliner butterfly or snowflake. He’s a special breed of dudes who actually cares and it quite clearly shows through something as his most recent festival banger dropping duties at Ultra.
PAY RESPECTS TO PUMPKIN, ACTUALLY LISTEN TO THAT WHOLE SET PLEASE.
About Kurt Kroeber
From deep within the murky depths of the Los Angeles River emerged a creature: 50% raver, 50% comedian, 10% Robotcop. Kurt Kroeber doesn’t own a dog, operates Soundbleed (the world’s only dance party comedy talk show rave), and is down to party with you. Come up some time and say “Hey dude!” But definitely make sure to casually drop the secret Illuminati password.
