NEW INDIE POP: MALLRAT - TOKYO DRIFT
17-year-old Australian songwriter MALLRAT is quickly gaining momentum with her bubbly electronic style that has a delicious pop-infused twist. Her new single, “Tokyo Drift,” is a majestic laid back whirlwind of 808-style beats, echoing electronics, and her silky smooth talk-singing style that flows effortlessly. If you’re anything like me, you’re going to be totally hooked the second you hear the way she matter of factly sings, “and we’re never on time/ laughing at the wrong time/ laughing for a long time/ think it’s gonna be alright.”
MALLRAT - TOKYO DRIFT
“Tokyo Drift” is off of her new Uninvited EP, and it showcases her knack for writing relatable and simply great lyrics that are resulting in comparisons to other groundbreaking artists like LORDE or CHARLI XCX. Lyrics like “we don’t talk much but I hope that you’re well,/ let’s drive to the beach and play songs from 2012,/ I’ve been meaning to text you for seven or eight days/ get back from your vacay,/ meet me at HJ’s,” flow together in her signature catchy groove.
All in all, it’s a light and airy track with an uplifting vocal melody that will keep you coming back for repeat listens. We can’t get enough of MALLRAT and highly recommend her buzzed-about new EP, Uninvited.
