TOP INDIE BANDS - WEEK 7 (10 MUST HEAR TRACKS) 2014

2/10/14
Best of Indie

Ain't Nobody Got Time for Bad Indie Music. So that's why we bring you our top indie music discoveries each week.  Our awesome Jess Grant has the week off, so that means I had to personally get out some pen and paper, cross reference BitCandy's Soundcloud, and BitCandy's YouTube and what we're hearing as the word on the street to bring you our favorite Top 10 picks of the week. We promise you this is put together better than an Olympics Media Hotel Room at the Sochi Olympics. Let's get started. (Artwork by Coco Neves).

BROKEN BELLS - LEAVE IT ALONE

Pretty stunning video here (that will also be making its way into BitCandy's Best Indie Music Videos post btw). And just what does this "red digital ball" represent? The sum of all fears? The continual change of mankind? Probably not. Probably it just "looks cool." Anywayz. The new album, After The Disco, just came out last week. And even though they're on Columbia Records (a major), we of course are gonna keep them in our Indie Post, thank you very much.

SAINTSENECA - HAPPY ALONE

This is a key track from Saintseneca's new album, Dark Arc, due out April 1st on Anti Records. But wait a second...WTF is going on here?! In the previous video, Broken Bells is fascinated by a "digital red ball" and Saintseneca is captivated by other circular spheres. This proves my long standing point that balls will always be popular. That's right. Balls. Eat it Craig Ferguson.

JORGE ELBROSE (JORGE ELBRECHT & ARIEL PINK) - CALLED TO RING

And WTF is happening here with these collaborations between Jorge Elbrecht & Ariel Pink? All I can say is MORE PLEASE. And BTW if you haven't seen the brilliant cover of Ariel Pink's "My Molly" with Sky Ferreira...I highly suggest you check it out here

LOWELL - CLOUD 69

It's not every day you get an album cover with a kitten jumping out from (or from within) a spread eagle snatch and shooting rays from its eyes. We've been following Canadian, Lowell for over a year now...heard some early demos that were maybe more in the Dido vein. However, with a change of direction (which I'm loving), she's struck up with Arts & Crafts and have a hunch they might be able to put each other on the map. "BIG TIME" (as Peter Gabriel once said).

ARIEL PINK - WAIT FOR KATE

Speaking of Ariel Pink (and the video previously with Jorge Elbrose), it reminded me I should share my favorite Ariel Pink song ever (and super weird and super awesome video), "Wait for Kate." Apparently this song is about Kate Bush. But we all know who the song is really about. Here's looking at you, Kate Upton.

CHAD VANGAALEN - WHERE ARE YOU?

Oh and now from one delicious album cover (see above delicious album cover from Lowell) to a scary female monster alien hybrid...comes Chad VanGaalen. We're loving the new song "Where Are You?" that the good people at Sub Pop just picked up.   Check it before you wreck it! (wait...that's not the quote...um...never mind).

KNOCK KNOCK HERE COMES JAMAL

I've been keeping an eye on Airworks and the sometimes beautiful, and the some times harder beats, and always great things from Airworks. Follow here

PINK MOUNTAINTOPS - NORTH HOLLYWOOD MICROWAVES

Pink Mountaintops' new album, Get Back, is out on April 29, 2014 via those jags over at Jagjaguwar. This little gem is called "North Hollywood Microwaves" and yes, check that lyric at the end about...not being scared about "bear cum" around 4:10. I kid you not. Unless I'm hearing this wrong. Which is very likely. OK...I'm not going to ask any questions about that. I'll let PETA take it up with the Pink Mountaintops.

NICOLE SABOURNE - CONQUER OR SUFFER

https://soundcloud.com/nicolesaboune/conquer-or-suffer

Nicole Sabourne is someone you need to know about from Stockholm, Sweden. Yes more awesome music from Scandinavia. So say "Hej" to Nicole. Because, that's how you do it in Sweden.

LES CLAYPOOL - WYNONA'S BIG BROWN BEAVER

I really don't know what Les Claypool has against Wynonna. I also don't think anyone has validated Les' claim about Wynona's beaver being both big and brown. All that i know is...that bass line is certainly turning my face and nose into "stinky finger" mode (um, that's a good thing).
