TOP INDIE POP: WEEK 38
It seems like it was just last week that I found myself in this same exact position, going through music releases and handpicking the best in indie pop. Oh, wait, yes, it was exactly a week ago. In case you’re new to the way we do things here, WELCOME! Each week the staff here at We Are: The Guard selects music that makes the cut. As you scroll on through today’s playlist you’ll get an idea of our standards. So grab a seat, light some candles, grab a burrito and enjoy the latest offerings from the featured artists including Galantis, Muna, Rae Morris, and more.
LANA DEL REY - WHITE MUSTANG
The queen of sad indie whose knack is to suck the joy out any sunny fun summer day releases a beautiful video for her single “White Mustang,” featured in her album Lust For Life. For Lana Del Rey fans, you’ll note that the lyrics make references to past singles such as “Summer Bummer,” “Born To Die,” “Diet Mountain Dew,” and a lot other Del Rey tracks. There’s really not much to break down other than A) it’s a sexy video starring two gorgeous people, and B) Lana has a thing for white cars.
GALANTIS & ROZES - GIRLS ON BOYS
We’ve all been that sad pasty looking guy. Your heart is broken and you’re going through life numb, but Galantis and Rozes make the lowest points in life feel spectacular. Great things are about to happen. It all just starts with a “broken heart.” Just hang in there and play this song over and over until your heart no longer feels anything.
RAE MORRIS - DO IT
Rae Morris is doing everything right in her new single “Do It.” The direction she is taking is breaking her out of restrictions and turning the page onto letting go of fears and putting guards down. Her sound is refreshingly liberating. Though it seems as if she is hesitant of fully letting go of whatever is holding her back, we are here to encourage her to DO IT! We love the high she’s on and know she will only go higher if she continues down this path.
MUNA - IN MY WAY
The girl power trio Muna continues to spread the message of positivity and confidence in “In My Way.” As front woman Katie Gavin puts it, “It’s about non-relationship culture, asking: how do you find intimacy during a moment when it's not always cool to put a label on it, when falling for another person induces not just excitement, but panic. Here, though, rather than focusing on the feeling akin to standing atop a cliff and looking down - it focuses instead on taking that leap of faith.” Oh millennials, you guys are complicated (yes, this includes me).
SAN CISCO - THE DISTANCE
San Cisco is a band whose tracks I always enjoy playing. They’re easy listening that put a smile on your face. Nothing ever too crazy, just good ol’ head bopping music that will make anyone who overhears what you’re listening to think that you are a legit hipster.
NOAH SLEE - RADAR
New Zealand native Noah Slee is here to wake us up from what has been kind of a soft pop kind of week. No shoes required to dance along to the high energy coming from the stimulating production. There are plenty more funky beats to be enjoyed; his debut album Otherland is available now.
U2 & KYGO - YOU’RE THE BEST THING ABOUT ME
I’m sure U2 is not referring to Kygo when Bono sings, “You’re the best thing about me.” Although, I do believe Kygo adds some much needed life to a track that originally sounded sleepy and ordinary. But now thanks to this collab, a generation who would not have known U2 had it not been for Kygo can appreciate these legends.
DENM - BLESS YOUR HEART
If you feel like we’ve been pushing the heck out of “Bless Your Heart” by DENM, you are right! We don’t want you to miss out on the artist who we’re currently crushing on. And we’re crushing on him pretty hard. We even went as far digging into some of his personal moments in our interview with him. Feel free to read and learn more about some of his most embarassing moments and best advice here.
SIOBHAN SAINTE - MIDNIGHT
The haunting tone from Siobhan Sainte compliments the season as we enter into the month of October. The songstress’ new single “Midnight” has a lot of works going on. It offers dark pop tones, creating an image of bad-assery. Sainte’s killer new single will make you an instant follower. Take a listen above and prepare to fall in love with what sounds like something that is soon to blow up!
COURTSHIP. - TELL ME TELL ME
Pop is nothing without love, and duo courtship. knows the importance of it. Heck, they wrote their latest single “Tell Me Tell Me” on the basis of love, and their work is as catchy as it comes. The track has all the right fixings to turn anyone’s crappy day into a good one. That’s the power of love baby, and if no one has told you today that they love you, allow courtship. to make you feel loved.
We’ll meet again next week. Thanks for tuning in as always. Hugs and kisses to all (we all need them right about now) and may the music be loud!
About Beca Arredondo
Beca Arredondo is easily unamused with all things not related to her interests. On her good days you can catch her avoiding the California sun and glued to her Mac plotting the next big thing. If you happen to run into her on the street and notice her wearing headphones do NOT disturb her. She is not responsible for any possible damage. Aside from the above she's very sweet and perky and responds well to good music and food.
