TOWKIO .WAV THEORY REVIEWED - 8.5
BitCandy Rating: 8.5
It’s an often forgotten fact, but life is better with mixtapes. It just is. As music grows even more digital this simple truth is in danger of disappearing completely.
Thank God for hip hop. Long live the Mixtape!
Chicago rapper Towkio, of the Save Money crew, just dropped .WAV Theory and holy sh*t is it hot (“Don’t sleep on that furnace”).
TOWKIO .WAV THEORY (PROD. TOWKIO & THE SOCIAL EXPERIMENT)
I’m pretty sure that this is the mixtape of the year so far. Much the same way I’m pretty sure I spend enough time on Datpiff to make such a claim.
This is a kitchen sink mixtape, with Towkio seemingly emptying his bag of tricks, showing vocal and lyrical dexterity that may be unsurpassed amongst his posse. Whether he’s mimicking Kendrick Lamar on tracks like “God In Me” and “RN,” or dabbling in that chamber hip hop thing Chance and and Co are popularizing on the title track and “Heaven Only Knows,” this kid more than meets every challenge he gives himself. There’s some inspiring swings and misses, as well as a whole lot of hits coming out of Save Money, and with .WAV Theory Towkio proves that he’ll be in the thick of what’s to come, if not leading the way for this crew.
TOWKIO “HEAVEN ONLY KNOWS (FT. CHANCE THE RAPPER)”
In theory, all rap crews roll deep, but gawddamn does the Save Money crew roll deep. Chance the Rapper and The Social Experiment are all over this tape and Vic Mensa has a scene stealing cameo as well. I’m pretty sure that every producer even remotely associated with Save Money lent a hand to the proceeding here, although the best beat and song were guided by Parisian DJ FKJ.
TOWKIO “I KNOW YOU”
When discussing this project with HotNewHipHop, Towkio had this to say:
"You can expect to get down. You gon' be able to dance, you gon' be able to vibe, you gon' be able to smoke, exfoliate, transcend... You know, all of that."
I’m not sure if I exfoliated while listening to this, but I definitely hit all the other markers promised by the artist. This is a focused tape that delivers the goods.
If the mixtape is this good, what’s it gonna sound like when this guy takes the time to make an LP? I’m excited to find out.
