Now that things here at We Are: The Guard are getting back to the norm (we rebranded in case you didn’t know), we are pretty much ready to get back to business and continue highlighting some of the most talented artists of the moment...but instead of presenting you with another Top 10 list, we’re slowing the pace down and giving you a one on one with the man responsible for making every day of the year feel like Summer...Viceroy.

Producer Viceroy aka Sultan of Summer recently kicked off his Live Winter Tour in North America and has released an official video for his single, “Marinate,” that features New York producer Wilki. The two create a dynamic hit with beats as bold as the dance moves below.

Before the San Francisco producer embarked on a busy tour schedule along with appearances at music festivals, we were able to ask a few questions. Once you read through the Q&A you’ll find even more reasons to have Viceroy on your playlist.

Thank you so much for doing an interview with us here at The Guard.

VICEROY: Thanks for having me!

What do you find interesting about music that others may not agree with?

VICEROY: That no one-single person’s taste in music is correct. Everything has its time and place, and it may just not be for you.

What made you fall into producing music?

VICEROY: Spending my spare time in college messing around with ableton with my homies. Super organic.

When you first started producing, was there any particular music that you wanted to make?

VICEROY: I’ve always liked Disco and I think I’ve showed aspects of that throughout my entire career.

Your music is very upbeat and without a doubt carries a summertime feel, can you tell us about the influence behind that?

VICEROY: I grew up in sunny California with awesome parents that filled my life with joy. Plus my parents always loved Disco so I just grew into it.

As your name and brand continue to grow has there been one moment in particular that’s made you say, “holy shit, I can’t believe that just happened.”

VICEROY: Margaritaville followed me on twitter. You know that obviously made my day. I think there's always something that surprising me on any given day.

Do you ever go back and listen to some of your early mashups and think "WTF was I thinking?"

VICEROY: Yes. except for this one. This one is all time:

What has been the biggest compliment you have received?

VICEROY: That I have great legs.

How do you prepare for a live show?

VICEROY: The guys I do my live set with are all improvisational musicians. So we practice the songs but the great thing is they can jam over literally everything.

Who do you want to work with?

VICEROY: Hall & Oates, Oliver, Bruno Mars, Anderson Paak.

What is the one thing you can't travel without?

VICEROY: My airline get up. Sweat pants material from head to toe.

If we were to look into your fridge right now, what would we find?

VICEROY: Sriracha, a bunch of coconut water, and either the worst food for you or the healthiest shit you’ve ever seen. Varies on the day of the week.

If you weren't a producer what would you be?

VICEROY: I was already being groomed to work in the music business. I was interning at Major labels in college and I probably would've gone into A&R or mgmt.

What can we expect from you in 2017?

VICEROY: My live tour, an EP with Sweat it Out, and so much more!

Thank you very much Sultan of Summer.

To stalk, we mean to stay up to date on Viceroy, follow him on Facebook and be sure to heart his tracks on SoundCloud.

About Beca Arredondo

Beca Arredondo is easily unamused with all things not related to her interests. On her good days you can catch her avoiding the California sun and glued to her Mac plotting the next big thing. If you happen to run into her on the street and notice her wearing headphones do NOT disturb her. She is not responsible for any possible damage. Aside from the above she's very sweet and perky and responds well to good music and food.
