Best New Tracks: Daughter "Human"

5/14/13

Here at Bitcandy we've been all about the debut full-length from North London trio Daughter, If You Leave. Last week we introduced you to the nostalgic-upon-first-listen "Youth," and today we have another best new tracks from the same record: "Human."

"Human" is not a cover of The Killers' hit, despite Elena Tonra's penchant for making kickass covers. Instead it's a track very much in the same vein as "Youth", i.e. it's about lost love, phantom limbs, being worn down by the grind of existence, the dehumanizing aspects of modernity/growing up, etc.

To me, this song feels either like an extension of, or a response to Neko Case's "I'm an Animal," but that's because I'm weird like that.

I have no idea what you'll take away from listening to Daughter's "Human," but you can find out for yourself below:

The lyrics for Daughter "Human" are below:

Woken up like an animal
Teeth ready for sinking
My mind's lost in bleak vision
I tried to escape but keep sinking

Limbs lost to a dead wait steak
Skull cage like a prison
And he has lost faith to ever see again
So may he once taught of me then

Underneath the skin there's a human
Buried deep within there's a human
And despite everything I'm still human
But I think I'm dying here

Waking up like an animal
I'm all ready for healing
My mind's lost with nightmares streaming
Waking up (kicking screaming)

Take me out of this place I'm in
Break me out of this shale case I'm in

Underneath the skin there's a human
Buried deep within there's a human
And despite everything I'm still human

I think that I'm still human

Underneath the skin there's a human
Buried deep within there's a human
And despite everything I'm still human
But I think I'm dying here

What are your thoughts on "Human" by Daughter?
Is Elena Tonra a brilliant writer or a one-track pony?
And honestly, can't it be both?
Lastly, am I the only one who listened to this record and yearned for the days when I could still feel?
