Gossip Review - Plump Chicks are Hot

The Gossip Review - Plump Chicks are Hot

The gossip on Gossip...in my opinion is they kinda got a bad rap on this album.  Just a quick perusal if you look on line and the albums been slammed pretty hard.  (Insert your own sexual double entendre reference here...mine would involve a pregnant Jessica Simpson.  I know gross.  That's how I roll).

Part of the Gossip poo poo-ing on "A Joyful Noise" might be the backlash of the choice of producer, Brian Higgins (um kinda a big downgrade from Rick Rubin...that's like moving from a 1972 Ferrari Daytona to an Acura...sure...they'll both get you where you're going but not in the same way).  And or any of you that don't know the name Brian Higgins...let me fill you in  He's behind some of the UKs mostcheeze-tastic (but very tasteful good cheese) UK pop...a little "song factory" called Xenomania.   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xenomania

And the new Gossip album does pop!  And with another turkey sandwich under her belot so will Beth Ditto.  But that's another story.  Plump girls can rock, yo.

But to frame this Brian Higgins thing. This would be like getting Dr. Luke (nearly every Kesha and Katy Perry hit) to produce the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs album.   Kind of sounds good for a second...and then you get kinda sick.  (Btw I saw Kesha recently and she was getting a little plump herself.)

Anywayz...look, I liked the new Gossip album...I mean quite a bit.  I can't say its a classic and if you're looking for more of a creddy Gossip indie thing...this isn't the album for you.  But great smart pop with big songs...yes.

Some of my favorites I've drawn to your deserved attention here:

Move in the Right Direction - Definitely one the best songs on the record.

Perfect World - the lead single...and I just realized that the Gossip's lead singer Beth Ditto...chose to go for a visual here of a "gothic" Adele.

Get Lost - ohhhh....90s house meets cool grooves. Explosive chorus makes me think of La Bouche. Ahhh.

By the way WTF is going on with the cover of this album?  Its kinda like a bad acid dream of Wicked...or I think its a cross of Cher and "V" from "V for Vendetta." Either way...not flattering. Unless that kind of thing turns you on.

Overall I like this album.  But I do acknowledge some of the "stink" on this is coming maybe from an over thought label thing...I mean it's a little too slick (including the video).

And we like our Gossip a little rough around the edges.

What do you think?

What is Beth Ditto's favorite sandwich?

What's your favorite song on the album?

Would you do Beth Ditto?
