AMA LOU - WE TRIED, WE TRIED

11/21/19

Before everything became monetized and recorded, songs were passed down like folktales. Occasionally a new singer would take some creative liberties during a performance and another verse would be added to the song. Music is intended to be universal and communal. We hand down and share our favorite songs as totems of ourselves.

And few things are as universal as the disintegration of a romantic relationship. Roughly 85% of all songs are about getting dumped, unrequited love, or falling out of love with a person you previously were in love with.

Which is to say, a lot of ground has been covered when it comes to relationships ending. There’s not much new to say, so why not just grab an old classic and put your own spin on it?

AMA LOU - WE TRIED, WE TRIED

For all intents and purposed, Ama Lou’s “We tried, we tried” is a cover of Hi-Tek “Let It Go”, though the North London native makes it her own. Beyond an additional verse, she adds a unique perspective and verve to the track. The additional asides on the outro are also hilarious.

“We tried, we tried” is one of the standouts cuts off Ama’s major-label debut Ama, Who? The EP is available now on all streaming platforms.

Give it a listen and keep an eye on this gal, she’s going places.
