BEST CHILL MUSIC – WEEK 37

9/11/15

See, guys – I TOLD you September wouldn't be too bad! The sun is still shining (MASSIVE underestimation if you're currently in the Los Angeles/Southern California area!), your pale asses are still getting a tan and the following best chill music is still emitting plenty of summer vibes to see us through until fall. Featuring purveyor of chillwave Toro y Moi, London producer Tom Misch, Rouen beatmaker Petit Biscuit and many more, I'm confident this column has something for everyone. So grab your headphones and slap on the sunscreen – your weekend starts HERE!

TORO Y MOI (FEAT. SHORE) – HOLY NIGHTS

Chaz Bundick has no fucks to give. The dude just throws out whatever fire takes his fancy. On his latest mixtape Samantha, the former purveyor of chillwave turns his hand to hip hop production. As you can hear on “Holy Nights,” he's a total natural, teaming up with SHORE to create a track that can only be described as Yeezus on a heavy dose of narcotics.

HONNE – CHURCH RAVE IN MIAMI

HONNE are throwing a “Church Rave in Miami” and you can bet your sorry asses you're invited! Just don't forget to stick this slow-burner on once the comedown hits. The London duo's soothing, indulgent and late-night breed of R&B is the perfect antidote to an evening of hard partying/illicit substance taking. Not that I'd know ANYTHING about that :).

PAT ANIMALS – LAZY

Stanwell Park producer Pat Animals makes like a young Chet Faker on his debut single “Lazy.” Formidable beard and all. Give it a minute and he'll be taking over triple J Unearthed. Give it five and Flume will be begging to collaborate.

TOM MISCH – BEFORE THE RISING SUN

Tom Misch remixing The Carpenters? I CAN'T EVEN. Can this man do ANYTHING wrong? This is smooth as black molasses. Crackly, jazzy and groovy goodness. I don't think I'll EVER get over the novelty of hearing Karen Carpenter crooning atop a Tom Misch beat. Only thing that's missing? One of the London producer's signature guitar solos. No matter, I'm still going to indulge in it for the rest of my life.

TINASHE (FEAT. YOUNG THUG) – PARTY FAVORS (PROD. BOI-1DA)

Yo Tinashe, I'mma really happy for you, and I'mma let you finish, BUT THAT BOI-1DA BEAT IS THE BEST BOI-1DA BEAT OF ALL TIME! If your subwoofers need a good seeing to, then crank “Party Favors” up from “0 to 100”!

MMBLR – WE ARE ONE

This ambient odyssey of wordless vocals, layered synths and organic sounds from MMBLR is perfectly crafted and chill AF. Grab it for free along with the rest of the Queens producer's debut EP on BitTorrent Bundle. Pay $3.99 and you can also unlock five virtual instruments so you can make your own version of “We Are One” – who knows, if it's good enough, I might even feature it here (I won't).

HARRISON BROME – POOLS

Can Harrison Brome's music sound anymore effortless? “Pools,” his third single in as many months, is pure electro-soul luxury. The 19-year-old Vancouver crooner has a voice made of liquid gold and I want to bathe in it. BRB, going to light some candles and dive in.

PETIT BISCUIT – OCEANS

When I was 15-years-old, I had the emotional range of a teaspoon. The same can't be said of Rouen beatmaker Petit Biscuit, who at the same age is making some of the most visceral music on the blogosphere. Case in point: “Oceans.” A scintillating slice of deep house incorporating hypnotic Hindi vocals (think Jai Paul's “Indian Summer”), this precocious producer is definitely one to watch.

ALASKAN TAPES – SILHOUETTES

Alaskan Tapes with some dark, cinematic and atmospheric ambient music. Like the soundtrack to a long-lost dystopian movie directed by Stanley Kubrick. Those keys are giving me goosebumps. Going by his SoundCloud, this prolific Toronto producer puts out masterpieces à la “Silhouettes” all of the time and I can't wait to explore him/them further.

TENANT – UNISON YELLOW

FaltyDL's label Blueberry Records continues to deliver the goods with this snappy, crackly and poppy track from the most mysterious Tenant. With its glitchy syncopated beat and roaming synths, “Unison Yellow” reminds me in many ways of Aphex Twin's more ambient works, which coming from a Richard D. James fangirl, is a VERY big compliment indeed :).

Thanks for listening, guys! Until next week, stay chill (quite literally – it's hot out there!). x

About Jess Grant

When Jess Grant isn't writing on music, she can be found playing it – on her guitar, on her ukulele, and on her recently acquired mandolin. Playing it hideously, she ought to add. Jess also studies. She studies the English language, to be precise. Jess is currently on her way to a degree in the subject, and enjoys starting and never finishing novels, screenplays, and poetry in her spare time. She also likes dogs. Lots of dogs.
