BEST CHILLWAVE SONGS - WEEK 49 2013

12/6/13

Looking to get away from this seemingly never ending spiral of death, but Lana Del Rey's film, Tropico, isn't your idea of escapism? Immerse yourself in this week's best chillwave songs. Thanks to the Curators who helped out with this week's picks from Twin Caverns, aus, Esta and more. If you've got what it takes to contribute to any of our weekly roundups, go and sign up to be a Curator!

AKEDA – BORN INTO THIS

A gorgeous French girl sampling Charles Bukowski over a trap beat? The impossible has happened, I think I'm in love, hipster. Name your price for the Born Into This EP over at AKEDA's Bandcamp.

BON IVER – HINNOM. TX (TWIN CAVERNS REMIX) – CURATOR DUFFSTER

Remix, cover, rework. Call it whatever you like. All I know for certain is this take on Bon Iver from the Australian duo, Twin Caverns, is pure, unadulterated bliss. Thanks to Duff for giving a heads up.

RACHAEL BOYD – GO BACKWARDS NOW!

You can always rely on Bad Panda Records to deliver the goods. I'm obsessed with this composition from the classically trained Irish virtuoso, Rachael Boyd. I demand more violin in contemporary art.

ACTIVE CHILD – SUBTLE (D33J REMIX)

One of my favorite local producers, D33J, has unveiled a remix of “Subtle” by Active Child, or as I prefer to call him, the king of ginge. Only problem, where are Mikky Ekko's bitching Jacko vocals?

ALINA BARAZ & GALIMATIAS – MAKE YOU FEEL

“Make You Feel” makes me feel warm, safe and loving, kind of like my imaginary boyfriend does. I hope this isn't the final time Cleveland's Alina Baraz and Denmark's Galimatias plan on teaming up.

STILL PARADE – ACTORS (FLUXUS HEAD REMIX)

There may be no sign of any new material from Still Parade, but at least they've uploaded this remix of “Actors” in the meantime. I'd go and subscribe to Fluxus Head over at SoundCloud if I were you.

ANGELO MOTA – MYWAY2LOVE

Thanks to Angelo Mota for turning me on to his latest cut, “myway2love,” through the Twitter page. Plug to one side, check out this feature by Calvin for more from this 18-year-old from West Orange.

IKEBANA – SPRING (AUS REMIX)

In July, the Japanese duo, IKEBANA, unveiled their beautiful sophomore album, When You Arrive There. This was followed by a remix album on Wednesday, headed by this take on “Spring” by aus.

EDAMAME & BIG JACKSON – HOLDIN ME – CURATOR DUFFSTER

Edamame and Big Jackson continue to ascend The Hype Machine that is life, and absolutely not the  lame blog aggregator, with “Holdin Me.” If you dig, take a listen to their other jam, “Think of You.”

ESTA – MOET (FEAT. JBIRD) – CURATOR UNCLE FLEX

Props to Soulection Records for hooking us up with a download of “Moet,” a bedroom instrumental lifted from Esta's fifth album, Paradise. Heighten the experience by drinking actual glasses of Moet.

That's it for this week's best chillwave songs, hipster! I'm back Friday for even more. Don't forget, if you've got what it takes to contribute to any of our weekly roundups, go and sign up to be a Curator!

About Jess Grant

When Jess Grant isn't writing on music, she can be found playing it – on her guitar, on her ukulele, and on her recently acquired mandolin. Playing it hideously, she ought to add. Jess also studies. She studies the English language, to be precise. Jess is currently on her way to a degree in the subject, and enjoys starting and never finishing novels, screenplays, and poetry in her spare time. She also likes dogs. Lots of dogs.
