BEST OF CHILL - WEEK 20

5/17/19

I don't know about you guys but it’s been one heck of a week. Between work, family drama, and having to deal with myself, I for one am glad it’s Friday. For many, Fridays mean weekend mode on, for us at We Are: The Guard, it means it’s that time again where we step away from work to enjoy 10 of the most chill songs of the past seven days. Join us in mellowing out to the following songs from artists like Arie Lennox, Emotional Oranges, Elohim, and more. You’ve earned this!

ARI LENNOX - FACETIME

Like Campbell’s soup, Ari Lennox is mmm, mmm, good. She’s so good that you’ll want to pour yourself a second, no, a third serving of her “Facetime.” Co-produced by J.Cole, “Facetime” forms part of Lennox’s debut album Shea Butter Baby, Her soulful vocals and playful lyrics make her hot hot hot. This is one artist you want to keep tabs on.

FLYING LOTUS - MORE FEATURING ANDERSON PAAK.

Pffftt. I want whatever Flying Lotus and Anderson Paak. are on. I want to go where egos burst into fire. I want to feel as free as this song makes me feel.

GNASH - I’M SO SAD

gnash is sad and he’s letting you know how sad he is and why he’s sad. Once you figure out what the song is about, you’ll find yourself equally as sad as gnash. It’s ok to be sad as gnash mentions in his track, but just remember … we’re here for ya if you ever need a shoulder to cry on.

ELOHIM - PILLS

Oh geez, I have no idea how Jess our regular Chill column writer does this, but these chill songs make me want to drown in a bottle of cabernet not because they're bad bad, but because they make me feel blue and achy … perhaps Elohim and I need some pills or a hug.

BEABADOOBEE - DISAPPEAR

Oh this is just beautifully painful. Talk about loving someone with your entire heart, body, and soul, just to be left with your heart torn out. Beabadoobee draws out tears and blood with her single “Disappear.” If someone ever disappeared on me, I wouldn’t be begging them to please come back, nope, take that train straight into south Detroit, I’ll find somebody else there.

BJORK: TABULA RASA

No need to be high on any substance in order to feel like your tripping when you watch Bjork's video for “Tabula Rusa.” The visuals alone in “Tabula Rasa” open up a third eye leaving you in another realm.

RYHE - NEEDED

“I want to be needed, that’s what I need,” sings Rhye. The artist lays out his emotions with an end result of beautiful vulnerability waiting for a response. “Needed” begs to be played for your loved one tonight.

SAFE - OLD WAYS FEAT. QUIN

If chill R&B were a thing, Toronto crooner “Safe” would be a leading artist representing sad songs that make you move to the beat.

EMOTIONAL ORANGES - UNLESS YOU’RE DROWNING

Are words really needed for this banger? Can we just be content listening to this single by Emotional Oranges? Can we just listen to this and take our emotions out to the dance floor?

TYCHO - PINK & BLUE FEAT SAINT SINNER

Tycho’s music makes me wonder if he’s at all human. Taking elements that he envisions, in this case the human voice, he creates music. However, “Pink & Blue” stands to be different than other works of his in large part because if the featured vocals. To us this is great because the foundation is very much Tycho but the perk is the voice of Saint Sinner. Stay tuned for a new album dropping June 12th.

That’s all the chill we got. Hope it helped take the edge off. We’ll see you next week with more.

Beca Arredondo is easily unamused with all things not related to her interests. On her good days you can catch her avoiding the California sun and glued to her Mac plotting the next big thing. If you happen to run into her on the street and notice her wearing headphones do NOT disturb her. She is not responsible for any possible damage. Aside from the above she's very sweet and perky and responds well to good music and food.
