BEST CHILLWAVE SONGS - WEEK 7 2014

2/7/14

Okay, so there are two ways you can spend today! You can sit at home, eat Cheetos and watch the Opening Ceremony of the Winter Olympics take place at what is arguably the largest homophobic ski resort known to man (all the while praying for a Pussy Riot cameo). Don't forget, Canada are going to open up a can of whoopass on us anyway! Or you can sit at home, eat Cheetos and tune into this week's best chillwave songs instead. Thanks to the Curators who helped with today's picks from TwoThirds, Washed Out, Edapollo and more. If you'd like to be a Curator, then sign up here!

TWOTHIRDS (FEAT. BIJOU) – DAYDREAMER

Monstercat Records deliver the goods once again! This is an absolutely epic drum and bass tuneage from upcoming British producer TwoThirds. I have no idea why so many people are hating on Bijou's vocals in the YouTube comments! Jesus, is anybody else hypnotized by that equalizer?

MOBY – ALMOST HOME (WASHED OUT REMIX)

Oh shit! Moby and Washed Out have teamed up? If I'm not careful, I'm going prematurely ejaculate all over this column, you're going to go home disappointed, and I'm going I cry myself to sleep. So is the power of this coming together (coming, get it?) of two of my favorite ambient producers!

PATTERN IS MOVEMENT – RIVER – CURATOR BECA

It's about fucking time, Pattern Is Movement! How long has it been since we last hung out? 5, 6 years? As soon as I hit play on “River,” it felt like you'd never left my side. Is this “chill,” though?  Bruce Springsteen piano and horrible quantization makes me uptight. Or is that my period?

THE ANALOG AFFAIR – TAKE ME HOME

Close your eyes. Erm, you obviously haven't closed your eyes as you're reading this? Okay, read this, then close your eyes! I want you to imagine you're driving late at night with the top down and this blasting out of your sound system. Open your eyes. Surprise, you're Ryan fucking Gosling!

ALICE JEMIMA – NIGHTCALL (KAVINSKY COVER) (WKND REMIX)

Since I'm on the topic of Ryan Gosling! You may remember Alice Jemima's ghostly interpretation of “Nightcall” was a hit on YouTube last year. German producer WKND has since taken that cover, transformed it into a deep house cut and most importantly, not killed a single vibe in the process!

GENESIS – DRUG

Damn! I feel like this girl is preaching direct to my soul. I hear you Genesis, I hear you! Dig on that sample of “The Cold” too. Mr. Everett would approve. Seriously, did you know Canada was capable of producing this kind of swag? I thought they were only capable of producing Olympians!

EDAPOLLO – BREATHING LESSONS

SoundCloud user Kalido expresses my thoughts on “Breathing Lessons” far more elegantly than I ever could. “Stunning mate, your production is tight as a duck's ass!” It's true, Edapollo sounds all at once tight and fluid, like a. Thinking about it, I'm not even going to finish writing that sentence!

SOLOMON GREY – LAST CENTURY MAN

Hang on a fucking second Solomon Grey! This sounds nothing like “Firechild.” Dudes have gone all Justin Vernon on my unsuspecting ass. I'm not sure whether to be impressed or disappointed? I think I'm leaning towards disappointed. No more Justin Vernons are needed on this girl's internet!

AIRWORKS – KNOCK KNOCK HERE COMES JAMAL

A dope intermission beat courtesy of Russian producer Airworks. If you're jazzed by this jazz composition, go and check out his SoundCloud page. All of his beats have an old school vibe about them, not to mention the fact they're up for sale. Take note, any of you budding rappers out there!

NICK LENG – YOU CRAWLED OUT THE SEA

Stop everything! Hit play on “You Crawled Out The Sea” by Nick Leng and for 3 glorious minutes, find yourself lazing beneath a palm tree on a beach in the Caribbean with only the ocean waves to keep you company. Mm, feels good doesn't it? Okay, times up, get back to the fucking office!

I'm afraid that's it for this week's best chillwave songs! If you had a good time, maybe we can hang out again next Friday? Let me know in the comments. Oh, and if you'd like to contribute, then sign up to be a Curator. Now I'm going to shut up as I really want you to see this GIF of Amy Poehler!

I am super chill all the time

About Jess Grant

When Jess Grant isn't writing on music, she can be found playing it – on her guitar, on her ukulele, and on her recently acquired mandolin. Playing it hideously, she ought to add. Jess also studies. She studies the English language, to be precise. Jess is currently on her way to a degree in the subject, and enjoys starting and never finishing novels, screenplays, and poetry in her spare time. She also likes dogs. Lots of dogs.
