BEST EDM - WEEK 20 2014

5/12/14

Hey y'all. I've been promoting my party on this site for a while now. It's called Soundbleed and it's a comedy dance party talk show rave. I host a talk show about dance music while DJ's play. Our guest for this party is the Main Course Boss Astronomar.  It's at Los Globos in Silverlake on Wed [5/14] and it's going to be the best party in the Universe.

Okay, here's the deal. If you agree with me on at least five of these songs, you have to come. I think that's a pretty fair deal. Oh, what if you don't live in LA?? Shit, well I didn't think of that. Well then I guess you just have to suffer the FOMO.

But for all of you who can come, don't FOMO yourself. Just come! It's $10 and starts at 9PM. Live Painting! Comedy Sketches

Now, off the pitch and onto the tracks!

BASSNECTAR - NOW FT. RYE RYE

The first track off of Bassnectar's new album and it fucking BANGS so hard. Bassnectar is coming out of the gate swinging with this. Bassnectar took a minute off and now he's back to fuck some shit up and take over the world. I'm in, Lorin. Let's go. I'll be hearing this song at the Red Rocks on May 30th and fuck yes to me.

CHRIS MALINCHAK - FREAK

Chris Malinchak is all like "deep house is done, let's move on to booty tech club bangers."  And I'm like "okay." Just like he did when he was making deep house, he fucking crushes booty tech as well. I can't wait to hear this in a club sound system. Sup Sound, time to book Malinchak.

HANDBRAEKES - #2

The first Handbraekes EP came out and I said, "well this is weird, and I like it, but I don't really think anybody else will."    Fast-forward and we get a second EP from Boys Noize and Mr. Oizo and it's far tighter, more accessible and heavier. This EP hopefully propels these two dudes into a tour and I get to see that tour. That's really all I want in life, just my favorite weird freak techno acts playing places I can see them at. Boys Noize is already playing this track out, so maybe it will be a hit! Fuck Dog Blood. I want Handbraekes.

LONDON GRAMMAR - HEY NOW (SASHA REMIX)

For a band that no one had ever heard of before a feature on Disclosure's album, London Grammar have done quite well for themselves. In the past two months we've seen remixes from Bonobo, Tensnake, Tourist, Zero 7, Arty, and Andy C. That's a lot of legends jockeying your shit. But let's talk about this Sasha remix for a second, can we? Sasha is at his absolute best when he's remixing indie rock and turning them into patient house anthems. It's no different here, just a new one to listen to on repeat forever. I can finally stop listening to his Hot Chip - Flutes remix 3-4 times a day. Maybe just once.

MOODY GOOD - HOTPLATE (PROLIX REMIX)

This track fucking bangs. OWSLA is always reliable with their drum & bass releases. I don't know much about Moody Good or Prolix, but I'm going to go out on the internet after I finish writing about this and do a little more research. Or should I do that now and have a little bit more to say about this track?

HOLD ON.

Oh, okay. So the original is some HEAVY dubstep released on UKF. It's cool too, but not my thing. I like the idea that people are still making 2011 dubstep -- I thought that was in the past. Shows what I know!

16 BIT LOLITAS - BEAT ORGAN EP

Is there a Deep House equivalent for Trance yet? Deep Trance? Did 16 Bit Lolitas and I just come up with something???? This EP is really cool. All three of the tracks are really different. It's super simple and soothing. I'd sway out to this a festival near you this summer.

ZEDS DEAD X HUNTER SIEGEL - LOUD

This song is fucking loud and heavy, and wild. This song, on a big sound system, in the middle of a rave is going to tear up dance floors. That fucking drum and that fucking bass on the drop here are so unique. It's nice to see the ZD boys always innovating (even it it's by collaboration, cause those are DEF Hunter Siegel's drums).

SKRILLEX - FUCK THAT (DOLAN DARK'S CRASH BANDICOOT REMIX)

HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH i fucking love this so fucking much. Dolan Dark drops in a Bass heavy remix of the Crash Bandicoot theme / Fuck That. This is the best fucking song I've heard in my entire life. Hold on, listening to this shit on loop for the rest of my life. Gonna get it surgically implanted in my goddamn brain.

JAMIE XX & NICOLAS JAAR - GIRL VS WORK IT (NICO'S BLUEWAVE EDIT)

Hold the fuck on. Nicolas Jaar and Jamie xx together with a slowed the fuck down Missy Elliot? Is this a joke? Is this a dream? Is this a joke dream? Is this one of the best tracks I've heard in 2014 yet? I don't give a SHIT. I will fucking treasure this unexpected gem.

OLIVER HELDENS X BECKY HILL - GECKO (OVERDRIVE) [RADIO EDIT]

This track was already unstoppable. But now, throw some beautiful British Garage-esque vocals and it gets carried into Overdrive.  I like the original, and I'll always go to the original, BUT it is nice to hear a vocal mix that actually works! This track is going to be HUGE and propel Oliver Heldens to the massive place he deserves.

FRANCOIS DILLINGER - PIMP TYPE PROBLEMS

My boy Subset just hit me up and said, "listen to this, this shit is fucking fire." I don't know why I put that in quotes as if that's actually what he said. It isn't. Whatever. This is some wild, inventive dark bass shit. It's got so much cool shit going on on top of it's already badass G-House undertones. I love this shit.

FIRST CHOICE - DOUBLE CROSS (ELI ESCOBAR DISCO MIX)

Eli Escobar is fast becoming one of my DJs. He turns American Soul into House music and it's beautiful and so much fun to dance to. I hadn't heard much production from him yet, so when I get my hands on ANY of course I'm gonna pounce on it. He doesn't disappoint here, remixing this Disco classic into some very groovy Nu-Disco using all the original parts. I'm pretty sure Eli Escobar is the next big thing, already proving to me that he can do no wrong.
