TOP DANCE SONGS - WEEK 38 2014

9/15/14

Last night I won free tickets to see Porter Robinson in Pomona. Drove out 40 minutes from LA to see the 'Worlds' tour that everybody has been praising like they haven't listened to Daft Punk's Alive 2007 227 times from beginning to end. It was fucking awesome. I was dancing. I was singing along. I was excited when he teased his old shit. It was everything you could have wanted from Porter and more. That kid works so hard on hustle and I have to give him so much props for that.

I was the oldest person there by at least 10 years though and it was AWESOME. So many kids high on life (and other shit) for the first time. You kids love your dance music in a way that I could only dream of loving it. Please slow down time. Find a bubble to live in. Don't get old and jaded like me. Treasure your youth. Sing LOUD to Lionhearted. You Only Live Once!  ;)

Speaking of Jaded, let's hear my dumb blurbs about awesome songs. This week we got some Dark Disco, Experimental Trap, Powerfunk, IndieHouse and something I literally have no idea how to describe.

Let's Party.

CHROMEO - LOST ON THE WAY HOME FEAT. SOLANGE (SHASH'U PWRFNK REMIX)

It's quite a bold move on the part of SHASH'U to refer to ANY remix of Chromeo as a PWRFNK one. How could anything be power funk regarding the funk lords??? That'd be like Carnage - Chiptole (Kurt FSTVL TRP Remix). This track is a lot of fun, and funky as fuck. FNK remixes of FNK all day. Why Not?!

ARYAY - THE LAWNMOWER

HAHA This track definitely doesn't take itself too seriously. It starts off with a build that sounds like an epic piece of orchestral film score before saying "The Lawnmower" and dropping into a damn fun trap beat. Undying faith in everything OWSLA releases. I'm down for anything fun and anything silly. I hope this song reminds us all to stop being so fucking jaded and just… "The Lawnmower!"

3LAU - 15 DROPS IN 30 SECONDS (UNORIGINAL EDIT)

The Edit King strikes again. Fuck it, if everybody else can do shit like this, why can't 3LAU, a dude who BLEW UP because he had the best edits in the game. This drop is smooth as fuck. 15 drops in 30 seconds and I bet most kids wouldn't even know this wasn't original. Props 3LAU. Mad Props.

OLIVER - LIGHT YEARS AWAY

By the refracted light of disco ball, Dark Disco lives and breathes to see another day. "Light Years Away" is low key and patient, keeping the dark club grooving all night long. And then "Fast Forward" has got some epic synth soloing and one of the best hooks I've heard all year long. There's nothing better than an artist you love looking you in the face and going, "Hey Kurt, remember how much you fucking love us?!" Now I do, Oliver.

JUST A GENT - WARLOCK MASQUERADE

I know I'm such a genre whore. Is something Dark Psych Acid? Or Trippy Trap? Or Dub N Bass? But this? I literally don't know what the fuck this is. And that's super fucking exciting to me. I'm just gonna call this Warlock Masquerade music.

RUSTIE - RINSE FM MIX FEAT. D DOUBLE E, NIGHTWAVE & WORLD'S FAIR

Rustie is a lone soldier out there fighting the good fight. Taking trap sounds and making them so fucking experimental and epic. Ain't never a bad day when you got to listen to a two hour mix from a master at work. I'd take this Rinse mix (minus the promo bumps) over an album from the man, anyway. Also, this mix is happening as a promo for Rustie's new album. I GET it. I just prefer this. Him in his element.

THE MAGICIAN - SUNLIGHT FEAT. YEARS & YEARS (BLONDE REMIX)

ANY remix of this track. Give me all of them. Force me to get down to this song for 32 hrs straight, I don't GIVE A FUCK. Sunlight is that dark-horse contender for song of the summer.  Blonde breathe new life into it with this new bouncy bass line. It's funky and fun and icing on a perfect track. Thanks guys.

CARMADA - MAYBE

UHHHHH LDRU and Yahtzel got together while we weren't looking and started their own Aussie Future Bass supergroup. This is like What So Not 2.0 GUYZ. Remember how much you love What So Not? These guys are gonna be like that but prettier and chiller. Can't wait to see where these boys go.

BOTNEK & 3LAU - VIKINGS (BIXEL BOYS REMIX)

Botnek & 3LAU make some of the best big room out there right now. But here Bixel Boys hop on top and bring the big room back down to the small room. Bixel Boys turn this Big Room Anthem into another one of their dark club bangers. These dudes are turning the club up, down, inside out, over the table, doggy style. Let's fuck the club up, Bixels.

BAT FOR LASHES - LAURA (MARK KNIGHT AND GRAFFITI ON MARS REMIX)

I haven't listened to Indie Rock since like 2010, but Bat for Lashes' Laura (2012) has still somehow managed to worm its way into my heart without a remix to speak of. Until NOW. Mark Knight and Graffiti on Mars know what I know, this track would work suuuuper well with some banging house underneath it.  :)

Thanks for reading and listening to all the songs another week in.  I really appreciate you and hope you have a beautiful day.
