BEST ELECTRO MUSIC - WEEK 11 2014

3/11/14

Apologies that this is up a bit later than usual, I spent the entire day hyper focused on all this new Skrillex shit and couldn't remember what day it was. We all know that Skrillex news is more important than anything else that could possibly be going on with your life. Work? Play? Honestly, I could care less. Skrillex's new album, Recess, is streaming. There are Eleven new Skrillex songs! Yeah, streaming on "Alien Ride," Skrillex's iPhone App designed by Sus Boy (the world's greatest living artist)! I don't understand how you could care about anything else but this as much as you should be caring about this. I know I don't. I actually got super distracted today and didn't do anything but listen to them over and over and over again. I can't be blamed for anything that did or didn't happen today because of it. (I forgot to walk my dog.)

Plus tour dates got announced today! He's on tour with Dillon Francis and What so Not and hmmmm those dates end suspiciously right on EDC LV weekend. Okay cool. Okay fuck yeah. A very merry skrillbirthday to me.

SKRILLEX - EASE MY MIND

Yo, it would be so easy for me to just post and write about all eleven new Skrillex tracks. But I'm not going to do that, mostly because I don't want to. Instead I'll just talk about this one cause I already knew it going into today and it's fucking dope. Skrilly closed Hard Day of the Dead with this track and everyone was crying and holding up their arms and then getting fucking down.  So many emotions. This is his replacement for Cinema (Remix) in his sets and I can't wait to see him close with it again. Come get emotional to it with me at Coachella or Red Rocks or Bonnaroo. Fuck it, I'm going on tour with him like a Skrillex deadhead.

THE PRESETS - GOODBYE FUTURE

A song so nice we post it twice. I'll post the stream, i'll post the music video, i'll post 700 different remixes, goddamnit. The Presets give us their own take on the Evolution of Dance taking a Caveman Rave (Cave Rave! Rave Cave!) to present day CIA (or something?) party. It's weird and dark and fun and dancey (oh shit! just like The Presets!). I don't actually know if I understand this video or not, though. Does it matter if I still had fun?

ALEX YOUNG - MADLIBS

I think Alex Young is a great lil youngster of a Producer. I don't even know if it's important editorially to mention these young dudes' ages any more. There are so many dance music prodigies nowadays, it's like, "don't even let me know unless you're in single digits." Absolutely none of that is important, though. This track is dope and it's nice to hear Alex Young bring some of these complextro sounds to Aussie Bounce.

CHROMEO - JEALOUS (I AIN'T WITH IT)

Produced by Oliver.

That's it. You don't need me to say anything else about this track. If a Chromeo track produced by Oliver doesn't get you to listen to it, then what the fuck is wrong with you?

A$AP ROCKY - IN DISTRESS FEAT. GESAFFELSTEIN

The Divergent soundtrack is fucking awesome. A Monsta remix of Ellie Goulding? Tame Impala & Kendrick Lamar (the good version of Kendrick Lamar and Imagine Dragons lol)? New Skrill / Zedd / M83? Chance the Rapper and Clams Casino? It's like a modern day Spawn soundtrack or some shit. The cherry on top has got to be this GE$AP Rockaffelstein track. A$AP Rocky's wild banger follow-up to Wild for the Night. Fool loves his Dark Electro. Well, so do I, A$AP. Let's hang out one night. We can blaze and listen to some Boys Noize. Text me.

ZEDD - FIND YOU FT. MATTHEW KOMA & MIRIAM BRYANT

I remember seeing little Zeddy play Dim Mak like two years ago, when all he had was a couple of Skrillex remixes and his Legend of Zelda track. Mad respect that this fool went from playing the smallest clubs in LA to writing the biggest pop songs in the universe in only two short years. MAD RESPECT. Just don't count on chilling with me at a Zedd set though. I'll be at whatevers weirder, you know? Not my thing. Your thing? Good! LISTEN! Mad Respect. Peace Love Unity Mad Respect. PLUMP. ALSO on the Divergent soundtrack.

POPESKA - HEART OF GLASS (RIOT REMIX PREVIEW)

Hey! Some fun Electro! That's so rare. I think Wolfgang Gartner (Kindergarten Recordings head-honcho) did us all right by finding Popeska and allowing him to release shit while ignoring all other trends in music. Gives him the freedom to make some straight up 2011/2012 Electro (the way Wolfgang does). Dope. Keep putting shit out, Wolfgang! Keep making music, Popeska! Is Riot an artist or a 'remix name'?  If so, get a new more Googleable name, please.

TIESTO - CLUB LIFE EPISODE 360

As reliable as your favorite pair of pants. You know which ones I'm talking about. The ones that fit you the BEST, but have a huge hole in the crotch. It's Saturday though, you can wear them -- it's not like you're gonna leave the house or anything. Oh. It's the only pair of pants you own? Okay, you gotta go shopping. Beatport shopping. ;)

HAIM - IF I COULD CHANGE (MK REGRETS DUB)

I know that MK "stands for" Mark Kinchen, but I also choose to believe that it in fact stands for Music King. Every track he remixes or 'dubs' gets better by approximately 2 million and a half percent. Haim is just aiight so this original track was just aiiight. But MK comes in and makes it all 'damn girls!' and then everybody forgets how "just, okay" Haim is and we're collectively fooled into believing that they are some of the greatest artists of the year just cause MK is brilliant and can turn mold into gold. When those HUGE synths kick in at 2:18 I'm shaking my hips like it's my job (prostitution).

SKRILLEX - STRANGER (FEAT. KILLAGRAHAM FROM MILO & OTIS AND SAM DEW)

Okay, I lied. Two Skrillex songs. Sure all fucking tracks are dope. But this one is sticking with me. It's got these funky nearly Egyptian moombahton synths, 808s for 80dates, and that beautiful vocal hook that I can't get out of my head. Also Milo & Otis are opening every date on the Skrillex tour (so I'm sure we should be paying attention to them.) And you know, this is also on the Divergent soundtrack or something.

This week's post has been sponsored by Summit Entertainment and OWSLA records. Make sure to see Divergent in theaters everywhere March 21st and make sure to catch Skrillex on tour across America.

About Kurt Kroeber

From deep within the murky depths of the Los Angeles River emerged a creature: 50% raver, 50% comedian, 10% Robotcop. Kurt Kroeber doesn’t own a dog, operates Soundbleed (the world’s only dance party comedy talk show rave), and is down to party with you. Come up some time and say “Hey dude!” But definitely make sure to casually drop the secret Illuminati password.
