BEST INDIE MUSIC - WEEK 6 2015

2/2/15

If there was ONE good thing that came from being snowed in last week, it was that I had more time to filter through the blogosphere for best indie songs. LOL JK! This is Los Angeles, SUCKERS! Srsly, tho, I JUST about managed to survive the dreaded “Light Rainmageddon” that the City of Angels was cursed with in order to bring you BitCandy's first indie column of February. That's right, FEBRUARY! One month closer to summer and one month closer to festival season, BIATCHES! And what better way to celebrate that than with some new shit from Ariel Pink, Awolnation, Death Cab for Cutie and more?! TO THE MUSIC!

ARIEL PINK – DAYZED INN DAYDREAMS

King of the Oddballs, Ariel Pink, strikes AGAIN! Starring Mau-Mau frontman, Rick Wilder, as a washed-up rock star living in the doldrums of Los Angeles, this video for “Dayzed Inn Daydreams” is flamboyant, terrifying and overarchingly beautiful. Kind of like Ariel Pink himself, then! <3

AWOLNATION – HOLLOW MOON (BAD WOLF)

WTF did I just listen to?!

DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE – BLACK SUN

Ben Gibbard is sad again, everyone! That's what divorcing Zooey Deschanel does to you. The 13-year-old inside of me is going CRAZY over the emotastic “Black Sun.” The 23-year-old, however?! Not so much... SOZ! :(

PALMS – THIS LAST YEAR

WHERE HAS THIS SONG BEEN ALL OF MY LIFE?! Hiding on YouTube waiting for me to discover it 2 years too late, apparently! THE SHAME! But now that I've found Palms, an Australian four-piece specializing in rad-as-fuck guitar anthems, I'm never letting them go. Lucky for me they're currently in the studio recording the follow-up to their debut album, Step Brothers, then! \m/

SEAFRET – OCEANS

Introducing British duo and your new favorite folk outfit, Seafret. That's assuming you like your folk well-crafted, emotive and sung by a dude with a rockin' 'fro. Which, let's be honest, is basically everyone EVER.

FMLYBND – LETTING GO

Thanks to BitCandy and their innovative Windows Movie Maker© skills, you can now listen to FMLYBND's hit single, “Letting Go,” on YouTube.com while an exclusive selection of photographs of “the best looking band in California!” move across your Internet browser. YOU'RE WELCOME!

WOLF ALICE – MOANING LISA SMILE (LIVE ON KCRW)

 now we're rockin'

I'M FROM BARCELONA – VIOLINS

4 years, I'm from Barcelona. 4 YEARS! That's how long you made me wait for this. And you know what?! IT WAS WORTH EVERY SECOND! Taken from their forthcoming album, Growing Up is for Trees, “Violins” is an absolutely delightful return to form for the 19-piece Swedish collective. EEK! :)

KATE TEMPEST – BAD PLACE FOR A GOOD TIME

British bard, Kate Tempest, preaching some totally-not-pretentious-because-she-has-a-working-class-accent truth, if you're into that kind of thing. As for me, I'm sticking with the REAL People's Poet, Rick.

MATT WOODS – IN THE DARK

On his debut single, “In the Dark,” British newcomer, Matt Woods, brings together the vocal chops of John Newman with the emotional depths of Sam Smith to create something so breathtakingly gorgeous, it could change the fact of future soul as we know it. Just remember where you heard of him first, K?!

About Jess Grant

When Jess Grant isn't writing on music, she can be found playing it – on her guitar, on her ukulele, and on her recently acquired mandolin. Playing it hideously, she ought to add. Jess also studies. She studies the English language, to be precise. Jess is currently on her way to a degree in the subject, and enjoys starting and never finishing novels, screenplays, and poetry in her spare time. She also likes dogs. Lots of dogs.
